Ceiling fan installation: fixing advice

Looking for some advice on installing a ceiling fan in our bedroom. The latest heat wave has spurred us into action.

The instructions (US manufacturer) are shown below and state that it requires an outlet box (capable of taking up to 15.9kg) to be used to fix onto a beam or between beams using an installation hanger bar.

The fan retailer (Henley Fan) said that it's a simple job that any electrician could complete. I've been sourcing quotes from local electricians but haven't found anyone that has a great deal of experience installing ceiling fans. The guy I spoke to yesterday was planning to fix the fan directly to the beam and didn't think an outlet box was necessary.

So where I would appreciate some advice:

- Is the outlet box a 'must'?

- The fans don't include an outlet box. What would be a trusted brand (I see them on Amazon, but I don't trust some of the cheap rubbish on there).

- Could this job be completed from inside the bedroom or would access be needed from the room above, through the beams?

We've splashed out on fans for all our bedrooms, so I want to make sure they are properly installed.

Many thanks!

Graeme

Wooden window frame repair

Looking for some advice on this repair.

I've had a couple of quotes from decorators who say it just needs resin to fix it.

Elsewhere, I've read advice that it might need a carpenter to cut out the rot and replace the wood. But I'm finding it difficult to source quotes for that job.

Would resin be enough to fix this (long term), or will I be faced with another fix in a couple of years?

Thx

I’m comparing quotes for a home solar + battery install and would love some real-world feedback from people with experience of SolaX vs Fox ESS vs Solplanet.

Current context:

  • UK (london) based
  • Likely system size: 9–11 panels
  • Battery around 10kWh
  • Annual usage approx 3,000kWh
  • Plan to have an EV in ~5 years and ASHP in next 5 years.
  • Installer options have quoted different brands, hence the comparison

From my research so far:

  • Fox ESS seems very popular in the UK and gets praise for value/performance, but I’ve seen mixed comments about app/software/support.
  • SolaX appears to have a solid reputation and slightly more polished ecosystem/app.
  • Solplanet looks newer/less discussed, so I’m struggling to find much owner feedback.

For anyone who has one of these systems:

  1. How reliable has it been?
  2. Any issues with the app/monitoring software?
  3. How good is manufacturer support/warranty handling?
  4. Would you choose the same brand again?
  5. Is there a noticeable quality/performance difference between them, or is installer quality more important?

Would particularly appreciate feedback from:

  • Long-term owners (12+ months)
  • Installers who fit multiple brands
  • Anyone who has switched/compared two of the above

Thanks in advance — trying to separate genuine differences from installer sales talk!
