Can I freelance as an online tutor while working full-time? Need advice
I(F26) am about to start a full-time corporate job at PwC, and my employment contract has an exclusivity clause saying that I cannot engage in any other trade, business, or occupation without prior permission from the company.
I have been doing academic tutoring/freelance tutoring on the side, mainly helping students with subjects like economics/statistics. It is completely unrelated to my main job and would be done outside working hours.
I’m trying to figure out the best way to handle this.
A few questions:
- Should I ask HR for permission to continue tutoring?
- Is it better to ask immediately after joining, or wait until after probation?
- Has anyone successfully obtained permission from their employer for occasional tutoring/freelancing?
- If permission is granted, is there anything I should be careful about regarding taxes/TDS or declaring the freelance income?
- Would you personally continue tutoring if the company gives written approval, or is it still too risky?
I’m not looking to hide the income or employment from the company. I just want to understand the safest way to do this while complying with my employment contract.
Would really appreciate advice from anyone who has dealt with a similar situation.
