Le Morta - Atelier JHP

Chuffed with this! Love at first sight when folkywanderer posted his new knife last week. I went for the ‘brut de forge’ and couldn’t resist adding the mammoth ivory inlay. Extremely straightforward ordering process. Comes with a host of information which makes it a lovely ‘unboxing’ experience.

Last image is the new addition with its siblings :-) I think this is the type of knife I’m going to focus on, European slipjoints. When I decided to expand my very modest collection, I first went for adding iconic knives and brands: Buck 110 and 120, the big KA-BAR USMC one, Spyderco Manix 2, RR, Kershaw. It’s nice to have ticked those boxes, but I realised they don’t make me tick.

Somebody asked a while ago on one of these forums ‘what is value to you?’ I now realise that for me it is history, tradition and craftsmanship, knives representing a specific region. So, wishlists have been updated (with some very painful goodbyes) and lots of researching has been and will be done. I’m compiling a list of European makers and resellers, when ready I’ll post it here.

The Rookie

I’ve been bingeing Castle for a while now and thought I’d switch it up with another series. Decided to give The Rookie a go, only to be instantly greeted by the same face!

You asked, how did I use my knife today?

This is how I use my Buck 120 mostly. I’m disabled and use my gripper a lot. But what to do when you drop the gripper? Buck 120 to the rescue! That hook comes in really handy!

The cheaper end

I thought I’d explore the cheaper end of the spectrum and got these four (the Manix 2 is just for scale), their total is about half what I usually spend on one knife.

I thought Kershaw and Rough Rider needed to be represented in the collection and it’s going to be just that: box ticked, seen them, felt them, didn’t like them, stored them.

The Joker and Svörd on the other hand are little gems for the price!

Now I need to have another look at the wish list. I might not wish to repeat the purchase of knives just to tick a box.

NKsD

My first Böker, a Boxer Desert Ironwood, my first Spyderco, a Manix 2, and definitely not my first Victorinox :-)

Love them all. The lock on the Boxer is quite hard to depress though. I now get the hype about Spyderco. That is some very satisfying action, and the sounds :-) Open, close, open, close, open, close. This is my first Alox single blade Victorinox, lovely closing action on that as well.

Just found out it's best to use the thumb for pressing the lock on the Boxer.

Spyderco for lefties

Dear all, I'm in the market for my first Spyderco and I'm eyeing two models: the PM2 and the Manix2. The PM2 is being sold in a left-handed version, the Manix2 isn't.

However, when I take a good look at the knives, there's holes on both sides to accommodate the clip so it looks like I should be able to make the Manix2 suitable for left-handed use myself very easily, or remove the clip entirely (not a fan).

Could you please confirm my suspicions?

Quick roundup

Spur of the moment thing. Always liked knives (and swords) and there’s loads of them scattered around the house. Did a quick roundup of the knives on my desk and thought it would be fun to show them off. Over half of these I’ve had and used for decades, the rest are recent purchases with the intent of starting a proper collection.

Season 5, first time I think ‘no’

I’ve been binging this series and am loving it. I am now at episode 16 in series 5 and this is the first episode where I feel the writers have seriously misjudged a situation. Sure enough, I’ve had to use some pinches of salt and shrug off some minor inconsistencies, but not in a million years would a man be allowed to wander off on his own and look around in a woman’s shelter.
