How much does an erection actually say about a man’s attraction to someone?

My boyfriend and I were talking about attraction and erections, and he said that getting hard is basically an instinctive physical reaction for men.
He told me that he’s never gotten hard around another woman because he “wouldn’t let it happen,” but that if it did happen, he would naturally get an erection. He also said that if he were simply having a normal conversation with another woman, he could potentially get aroused even if he didn’t actually want anything to happen with her.
His point was that men can get erections without necessarily being attracted to or wanting someone sexually, because it can just be a physical response.
I understand that erections can happen involuntarily, but the idea that a completely normal conversation with a woman could make him physically aroused confused me.
For men, how normal is this, and how much does an erection actually say about whether you’re genuinely attracted to someone?

I 22F and my boyfriend 24M have been in contact after breaking up

I 22F have been with my boyfriend 24M for almost three years. We’re technically long-distance, although we’re only about three hours apart, and that’s always been the dynamic of our relationship.
We fell in love very quickly, and for a long time, we had a genuinely beautiful relationship. We put a lot of effort into each other, and I really felt like we had something special.
I also know that I brought some unhealthy patterns into the relationship. My previous relationship was emotionally abusive, and it gave me a pretty distorted idea of what relationships were supposed to be like. I ended up taking some of that baggage out on him. I can be impatient, stubborn, and difficult sometimes, and I know he put up with a lot from me.
Over time, though, he became colder toward me. He would still be loving at times, but at the same time, it felt like he was constantly finding reasons to be upset with me or not want to be together. I also started feeling like I couldn’t really express myself without being called dramatic.
Eventually, I stopped expressing myself altogether.
For the last few months, we weren’t having sex, but the problem wasn’t really just sex. I became emotionally and physically withdrawn in general. I stopped wanting to initiate affection, intimacy, or even certain things that we used to enjoy doing together. I had convinced myself that if I just kept quiet about things instead of expressing how I felt, we’d stop fighting.
Obviously, that didn’t work.
He did communicate this to me. He warned me multiple times that things needed to change, but I kept falling back into the same behaviour. Eventually, about a week ago, he broke up with me.
For the first few days afterward, we stayed in contact. He was extremely indecisive about whether he wanted to give us another chance. Then he blocked me, and we had about two days of complete no contact.
After those two days, he reached out again with a very long message saying that he misses me, that he’s not sure whether he wants to get back together, and that he doesn’t know if being with me would actually make him feel good again. He also said that it might not be fair to me to keep me waiting while he’s unsure.
We’re now planning to meet in person in about two weeks, when I have two days off, and actually talk about everything.
One thing he said that really stuck with me was that even if we were to have sex, he could potentially still not feel good about being together afterward. I won’t be sleeping with him unless we’re actually back together. I know myself well enough to know I’d feel used and hurt by that situation.
For now, we’re only communicating through text. I’m naturally someone who replies quickly and doesn’t really play games with communication. At the same time, I noticed that during those two days of no contact, he seemed much more emotional and afraid of losing me. Now that we’re talking again, I can feel myself becoming very available to him again.
I’m not interested in manipulating him or deliberately playing hard to get. I don’t want him to come back simply because he misses me for a few days. If we reconcile, I want it to be because he genuinely wants the relationship and believes we can make it healthy again.
At the same time, I’m struggling with how much contact makes sense before we meet. I don’t want to push him away, but I also don’t want to spend the next two weeks acting like we’re already back together while he’s still deciding whether he wants me.
The whole situation is especially confusing because I don’t think either of us stopped caring about the other. It feels more like we slowly became unhealthy for each other, and now we’re both trying to figure out whether the relationship itself is something we still want, or whether we’re just attached to what it used to be.
I’m trying to approach these next two weeks differently from how I handled things before. I want to give him room to actually feel the loss of the relationship, while also showing him that I’m capable of having a healthier dynamic than the one we had toward the end.
Then there’s the question of what happens when we actually see each other. Two days together after a breakup like this could either make things much clearer or make everything even more confusing.
For those who have been through a similar situation, how would you approach the period between the breakup and the in-person conversation, and what would you focus on during that conversation to figure out whether rebuilding the relationship is actually realistic?

Amizades novas
