Looking for a reliable hybrid car ASAP in the Chicagoland area, $10k cash max

Hi everyone! I’m looking to buy a reliable used hybrid car ASAP, ideally within the next week before university starts.

My requirements:

\* Hybrid

\* Backup/rear camera

\* 120,000 miles or less

\* $10,000 max, paying cash

\* Reliable and preferably good on gas

\* Clean title and no major mechanical issues

\* Located in or around the Chicagoland area

I’ve been checking Facebook Marketplace but haven’t had much luck so far. I’m open to different makes/models, so if you or someone you know is selling something that fits these requirements, please let me know!

I’m willing to travel within the Chicagoland area for the right car. I’m trying to get something ASAP, so any leads or advice on where else I should look would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

looking for a room (i’m lost)

Hi everyone!

I’m a transfer student from RIT, and I’ll be starting my MS in Food Science and Human Nutrition at UIUC this fall.

I’m looking for housing for the upcoming academic year.

* Move-in: Mid-August 2026

* Budget: $500-$650/month

* Looking for: Preferably a private room, but I’m open to sharing if it’s the right place.

* Location: Somewhere within walking distance of campus.

* Roommates: Female roommates preferred.

A little about me: I’m pretty easygoing, love cooking, keep my space clean, and would love to make friends instead of just living with roommates.

I’m also completely new to Champaign-Urbana and honestly a little lost 🧍🏻‍♀️👩‍🦯‍➡️. If anyone has recommendations on good neighborhoods, apartments, Facebook groups, websites, places to avoid, or can tell me if my budget is realistic, I’d really appreciate it. I’d also love any tips on finding roommates.

If you have a room available or are looking for a roommate, feel free to comment or DM me.

Thanks!

Is commuting from Evanston to UIUC a terrible idea? Incoming international grad student here 😭

Hi everyone! I recently got admitted to UIUC for Fall 2026 as an international graduate student in the dietetics/clinical nutrition program, and I’m a bit confused about what to do housing-wise.

I currently live in Evanston, and I’m trying to decide whether I should relocate to Champaign-Urbana or just commute. Is commuting from the Chicago area realistic, or would relocating be the better option?

If I do move, where would you recommend living? I’m looking for something safe, ideally not too far from campus, and my budget is around $600–700/month. I’m completely okay with roommates/shared housing.

Also, how easy or difficult is it for international students to find on-campus jobs? Are there certain jobs that tend to hire students more often?

Do I need to get a car for a living there or the public transit is just fine?

Would really appreciate any advice, especially from grad students, international students, or anyone who’s been in a similar situation. Thanks in advance! :)

UPDATE

Thanks for all the input. 🧍🏻‍♀️

I’ve decided to relocate to Champaign-Urbana instead of trying to make the commute work.

My family lives in Evanston, and since I lived on my own in newyork last year, I thought it might be manageable. That’s why I wanted to ask people who actually know the area before committing to anything.

Appreciate everyone who took the time to explain what that commute would really be like.

Now that I’ve made up my mind about relocating, I’d love any recommendations for neighborhoods, apartments, or housing options that are popular with graduate students.
