Pokรฉmon: Erebos Zenith ~~ Devlog #13

Heya~~!

This week has been mainly about doing the second city, battling against the compiler to get a good tileset to use. This as well as some new additions to the dex!

IMPLENTATIONS

  • Added Overworld Encounters, from one of the latests feaure branches from Pokeemerald Expansion
    • This means more work for me on the long run, since I'll have to make overworld sprites for all new fakemons
    • Additionally, I've added a new field in settings for players that do not want it, so that it is easily deactivated
  • New Tilesets specific to Meleville City, check credits on the image ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿฝ

POKEMON

  • New Pseudolegendaries for the region have been made! High-res art has been done by Hikoku, from fiverr, while pixel art is done by me ๐Ÿ˜ (I feel I have been getting better at it โ˜บ๏ธ)
    • The 3rd stage is branched depending on the location it is leveled up, reflecting a bit the game's story about the pilgrimage, and how much the path someone choses can change them.
    • Designed new abilities and moves (need to implement them)
  • Added many OW sprites from previous fakemons
    • This will be done when a fakemon is added to a route, or when I have some spare time, to not focus only on art

MAPPING

  • Made the layout for the Gate between Route 003 & Meleville City
  • Complete layout for Meleville City, the Grass / Fairy Gym city.
    • The City contains a small organic market at the bottom, the Gym and possibly will have the daycare at the top-right
  • Added some missing trainer battles and NPC interactions from previous maps
  • Added easy & hard difficulty tiers to missing battles
  • Added missing Wild Encounters for Route 003, as well as adding encounters on Meleville City

NPC

  • Made a slight tweak to Prof. Cherry's OW sprite. Literally added dots to the glasses so that it feels a bit less like a crazy scientist

NEXT STEPS

  • Keep working on the second battle against Rival Percy on Route 003
  • Add NPC interactions on Meleville City
  • Start working on the Gym layout

Heya~~!

I wanted to change the devlog's positing day to monday, so that it starts with the natural week ๐Ÿ˜„

This time there's many new Fakemons added in a week, and from this week onwards I'll be updating the Progress % to get a grasp of how much work is left ๐Ÿ‘€

IMPLEMENTATIONS

  • New Primary Tileset for "new_general", which will be used throughout the region (at least the grassy routes)
  • New Secondary Tileset specific to Route003

NPC

  • Added Gym Lead Trianta to the game! She will be the second gym leader of Gildeas, specializing on Grass & Fairy Pokemons. Her Ace will be Aurelotus ๐Ÿชท
    • Front sprite made by IronFanton
    • OW sprites made by me
  • Continued work on previous route trainers, adding the 3 tiers of difficulty.
    • I may have to redo some trainers to not have forbidden moves (with this, I mean moves that the pokemon may not learn in the ROMhack, since the TM list is different)

MAPPING

  • Layout for Route003 completed ๐Ÿ˜
    • Items & Hidden Items โœ…
    • Trainers โŒ
    • Rival Percy's 2nd match sequence โŒ

POKEMON

  • Implemented Broncolt & Temperion, the Ace line for Gym 8.
    • Implemented the signature move, Siege Charge
    • All sprites, besides the 2nd animation frame, are made by yogurcomics, from Fiverr
  • Implemented Lone Legion Falinks! First of the 12 Deviant pokemon from Gildeas, which are a reflection of the greek pantheon
    • New generic ability to be implemented, which will be shared with the other deviants. The abilitiy grants an aspect to each of these Pokemon, which give STAB to a hidden type, elevating their status.
    • In regards to stats I focused on them being more akin to Paradoxes than legendaries
    • Implemented the signature move, Legion Break
    • All sprites, besides the 2nd animation frame, are made by yogurcomics, from Fiverr
  • Implemented Denzap & Denizark, the Ace line for Gym 11.
    • Implemented the ability Mega Pluvia, which works similarly to Mega Sol, but instead of imitating harsh sunlight, it imitates heavy rain.
    • The high res art is made by Hikoku, from Fiverr
    • All pixel art sprites are made by me
  • Implemented Rotom Stereo to the game ๐Ÿ”Š
    • Added Stereo to the Rotom Catalog
    • Learns Boomburst when changing to this form
    • All sprites, besides the 2nd aniumation frame, are made by KingOfThe-X-Roads, Vent & LeParagon
  • Completed some of the missing backsprites & icons from previous Fakemons (Mega icons are credited on the mega sprites section)
  • Added all missing megas manually, check the credit section for all the great artists
    • I couldn't merge to the latest pokeemerald-expansion release do to having more than 500 conflicts, so I had to do that manually ๐Ÿ˜…. I decided that the version I have (1.15.0) will be the last one. I've lost an afternoon towards merging to no success, so unless I find something game breaking, I'll remain on 1.15.0
  • Implemented Mega Sol ability
    • Any case which would be affected by harsh sunlight is taken care of, and overrides successfully current weathers.
    • I also made it so that the AI understands the value of the ability towards move decision (same for Mega Pluvia)

MISC

  • We've finally reached 100 on the discord server! ๐ŸŽ‰

NEXT STEPS

  • Continue Working on Route003 Events
  • Have Maleville City done (gym 2 city)
  • I will need to rework all Pokemon available on the dex to use the TMs that are limited to the game (or just leave it as it is, but that may reduce the number of moves they can learn... what do you think?)
  • Start planning the Gym 2 puzzle

This week has been a big one ๐Ÿ˜, many additions to the project, from new trainer sprites, to a whole new minigame (thanks to Vol & PSF for their work!).

Here's the previous devlog:

IMPLEMENTATIONS

  • Redid the Region Map! Since the ROMhack won't use the Pokenav, I could discard the Zoom feature and have more than 256 unique tiles, thanks to the people at Rom Hacking Hideout discord community for their help ๐Ÿ˜Š
  • Added new Trainer sprites & Icons, from Team Aqua's Repo, check the credits on the image. Really thankful to the community for having free-to-use assets ๐Ÿ’–
  • Implemented the Mining minigame from Diamond & Pearl, from Vol & PSF's feature branch
    • Added my Ruin Fossil to the minigame
    • Will also add more stuff to the pool, such as Gimmighoul coins :D
    • This feature is available from the Ruin Maniac inside Mneme Grotto, by paying a small fee. After some time, the player will be able to do it with their own tools for free (this is mainly done to avoid a broken economy at early game)
  • New primary Tileset for Caves as well as a seconday Tileset specific to Mneme Grotto, with some messages ๐Ÿ‘€

MAPPING

  • Made the map for Western & Eatern exits for Mneme Grotto
    • North & South will be done when I get to it, since it will be currently locked by Surf & Rock Climb
    • As an addon to above, HM's won't be necessary. Tools will be used instead (which will need an animation of their own โ˜ ๏ธ)
  • Updated previous maps with new OW sprites, to add some variety

POKEMON

  • Implemented Pombon & Pomboth, with their sprites, in-game
    • Pomboth sprite made by Kei (fiverr)
    • 3rd Evo, Pomberus (Fire / Fairy) is implemented, but I am currently waiting for the sprite to be done
  • Implemented the Regional Bird of Gildeas
    • The high-res art is done by Hikoku (fiverr). Really great work! I'll for sure be keeping tabs with them (Already on some new ones ๐Ÿ˜„)
    • Missing Icons & Back sprites
  • Implemented a new ability for Asklet / Kestrike / Monastalon: Unshaken
  • Completed some of the missing sprites that I left to be done

NEXT STEPS

  • Next week I should have the art for the Fire / Steel line, which is based on the Troyan Horse (kinda), as well as the first Deviant, Lone Legion Falinks (Dragon / Fighting)
  • Having some talks to do the Pika-clone of the region, which will be Water / Electric (or Electric / Water, same thing)
  • I'll have to do the icons and backsprites for the Regional Bird line
  • Start route003
  • And the more time-consuming part, kinda... I'd like to update to the latest release of pokeemerald-expansion, to be up-to-date

Here's the regional bird for my ROMhack based on Greece (mainly), Pokรฉmon: Erebos Zenith!

I normally do sprites directly in pixel art, or ask for commissioned sprites to other artist, but this time I ask for high-res art to practice pixel art from a source (something that is currently being done ๐Ÿ˜„)

I'm in awe with the result, given that this time I gave some small details to the artist, and they managed to make such a great piece (I'm looking forward to keep working with them, for sure ๐Ÿ‘€)

Heya~~!

Two new lines of fakemons done, getting some practice with pixel art, and seeing some results ๐Ÿ˜. I've almost discarded one of them and struggled so much with the backsprites (as always).

Last week update:

IMPLEMENTATIONS

  • Added a new item, the "Relic Fossil", which is needed to get a Relicub, the fossil pokรฉmon of Gildeas!
  • Created and implemented a new move, Ruin Fangs, the signature move of Quimelith
    • Attacks and adds the curse status to the opponent. Maybe a bit too strong, I could change it to a new status similar to Salt Cure, and reducing the amount of damage per turn.
    • No animation done, TBD in the future
  • Created and implemented a new ability, Thick Bark, which is exclusive to Krasprig and Krastrunk, the Bug / Grass pokรฉmon. (the lil fella does not like to get x4 attacks)
  • Added rock climb field move

POKร‰MON

  • Created the fossil line of the region, Relicub and Quimelith
    • Added two-frame anims for the front sprite (this is my first time doing front sprite animations!)
    • Fully implemented move pool
    • This fakemon will be the Ace of the 9th gym, the Memory Badge, on a city based in Sardis
  • Created the bug line Krasprig and Krastrunk
    • Backsprites and icons still to be done
    • Fully implemented move pool and new ability
    • This fakemon will be the Ace of the 5th gym, the Growth Badge, based on Crete and inspired on the tree of Krasi

MAPPING

  • Route 002 is now completed, with the first encounter against Team Lethe and Rival Dahlia
    • I will change the sprite of one of the Grunts once I have a variant of a front sprite, so that the double battle does not feel like battling against two clones.

CHARACTERS

  • New sprites for Rival Dahlia implemented. Great work from IronFanton, same artists as the team Lethe grunts and the main character's front & back sprites.
    • Made the OW sprites and animated the throwing animation for the backsprite myself, based on IronFanton's sprite
    • Introduced as a coop battle against Team Lethe, instead of the traditional 1v1 against the rival.
    • She will be the main source of lore throughout the region, keep a look for her appearances ๐Ÿ‘€

MISC

  • We are almost 100 on the discord server ๐Ÿฅณ. I am really grateful for the constant support from the small community that has been formed ๐Ÿ’–
  • I am waiting for 3 lines of pokes that I've commissioned to be done:
    • The 6th gym's Flying / Fighting line, representing Courage
    • The 8th gym's Fire / Steel line, representing Determination
    • The first Olympian-adjacent pokemon, the "Lone Legion" Falinks, which is a deviant form of Falinks that has been separated from the group and gained the dragon type, and is a reflection of Ares โš”๏ธ

NEXT STEPS

  • Since I've did many pokemon lines in advance, I'll focus on the Mneme Cave map
  • Add the rest of building interiors on Skalista City
  • Keep building the lore of Erebos Zenith
  • I may update some more UI
    • Map may have some changes
    • The bag UI needs to be updated
    • Settings menu and the title screen menu also need a rework
  • I have to create new animations for Halo Burst and Ruin Fangs
  • And need to create Cries for some mons that still don't have them
