Went to one of the pancharamas - Amravati near Vijayawada Andhra Pradesh. Was stunned with the auro of long Shiva lingam . Priests do puja from ground and first floor.

Why is Abhishek done to Lord Shiva?

According to Hindu mythology, when the Samudra Manthan took place, Lord Siva saved the world by consuming Halahal which emerged from manthan.

To soothe the intense heat of halahal, the gods and sages offered the waters of the holy Ganges to him. This tradition continues today through Abhishek with milk, water, honey, and bel leaves.

As the event has happened in Shravan, hence Abhishekam in Shravan month is considered more auspicious.
