OBVERSE - Vertical Slice Demo Playthrough

OBVERSE is a problem-solving stealth-action immersive sim that is inspired by Prey (and caught Prey's creative director's attention). I tried the early demo and here's what I have to share.

The game sets in a secret underground research facility like many sci-fi games, player explore and discover, solve puzzles and overcome obstacles, outsmart robots and drones through stealth or combat, read notes to piece together the full picture.

This demo has all the standard immersive sim stuff, crate-stacking, vent-crawling, security-hacking, stealth-action, etc. What sets it apart is the hidden circuit puzzle layer, in which the player has to control the flow of signals.

You may need to find resources like laser cutter ammo to cut open vent covers to access new areas, or batteries to generate power signals; the appliance end could be a locked door, an unpowered computer, or a light bulb, which you can turn on for easier exploration or turn off to achieve better stealth.

Batteries and appliances may require signals of different color codes. In the demo, there's a tool that you can place onto circuit nodes to mix colors. More tools are currently in-game but unavailable. I look forward to a variety of more challenging puzzles.

The hidden circuit layer is laid out over the whole level, so the player has to do all those forementioned puzzle-solving while having stealth-action dynamics with the security measures. It's slightly on the harder side, but genuinely a fun experience.

Sinnoware Revisiting Arkane & Wolfeye Games

I revisited every game* from Arkane and Wolfeye studios, and picked one gameplay segment from each game.

(*Excluding: Ravenholm, LMNO, The Crossing, KarmaStar, BioShock 2, The Knife of Dunwall, The Brigmore Witches, Dunwall City Trials, Mooncrash, Youngblood, Cyberpilot VR, TranStar VR, Typhon Hunter.)

This is a simple showcase that highlights the immersive sim design philosophy as well as some random yet fun experiments.

Turn on closed captions for gameplay explanations and funny conversations. Enjoy!

Raf Colantonio's message to immersive sim fans.

"Hello, fans of the immersive sims.

I have seen so much love for Prey and Dishonored lately on X that it made me want to play the original Dishonored. It has been almost 14 years that I haven't played this game. And as I'm playing it, I'm recording, there's gonna be maybe about 10 episodes. I'll release them pretty soon. I've invited the original team, and so together we're having a lot of fun commemorating all those moments of… some of it was pain, and some of it was fun.

The point is, I was thinking, I've seen so much nostalgia, so many questions online about will we ever see games like this again, sequels? And the thing is, I don't know about sequels. This is not in my hands. But if you look at those games, like Prey or Dishonored, they're not the same game but they share a spirit, they share a DNA. And what I can assure you is that whatever Arkane is working on is probably gonna be sharing some of the DNA, whatever we at WolfEye are working on, we'll probably share some of that DNA, and same for Harvey Smith with his new team.

So my point is, the fans should rejoice, because the spirit goes on. And you will see more games in that vein."

A Twitter user itsmebelb posted a screenshot of Dishonored on April 26 (xcancel link), and it has led to Dishonored being trending on the platform again for a few days and gotten acknowledgement from co-creative director Raf Colantonio, game systems designer Dinga Bakaba, and lead concept artist Jean-Luc Monnet.

To everyone's surprise, Raf Colantonio has never played the retail version of Dishonored. Earlier today, Raf teased a developer commentary walkthrough of the final release with co-creative director Harvey Smith (xcancel link), potentially inviting Knife of Dunwall / Brigmore Witches creative director Ricardo Bare and Dinga Bakaba as well after being suggested.
