When your hike takes you from Spring to Winter, Maybird Lakes via Red Pine Trail, Utah, USA
9 miles, 2500 feet vertical, last quarter snowshoeing up steeps. Nice weather at lower elevations turned to a brief winter storm at higher ones. But all so beautiful.

About 11 miles and 4700 feet vertical. A quarter of the distance and a third of the vertical was snowshoeing in 3-4 feet of soft snow. Probably the most physically challenging day hike of the year. Did I mention I don't really enjoy traversing steep mountain slopes in deep, soft snow? (Ended up sliding into a tree well, which was thoroughly enjoyable ...)
About 8 miles and 3400 feet vertical. Rocky trail with regular reports of mountain lions. I see nothing, even with the aid of my new thermal binos. The rock formations are stunning and no photograph can remotely do them justice. This trail is a cathedral.
