First time grafting, so come learn with me as we torture our babies until they become freaks or perish. Two healthy caespitosa pups. Two hard grown outdoor northern prickly pear pads. One pad had the spines removed, one did not. Both were not rooted. No rot! Yet.
Week 1 notes:
Despined prick: shrunk more from water loss. Pup is very vigorous despite over hanging (ruh roh), pushing out a root into the pear. This pup has fight in him.
Regular prick: the loph was squashed! Too much pressure! But still it lives. Like its sibling it has fused to the prick. Slight new growth is visible in the center as tiny white puffs of trichomes appear.
Prickly pear is STICKY. The sap works as glue. If you're going to take the needles out of the prick, remember it'll lose a lot of water. That'll change the "floor plan" for your graft. Roughly rubbing off the needles takes care of most of them but with how vigorously pricks pup, it might be worth it to take out the areoles.
