T6 Questions
Hi all. Our small apartment building has been without hot water now since September 22nd. On this date, we noticed that we had no hot water and the stairwell smelled like gas. I mentioned this to the property maintenance company who maintains the building and they asked me (a tenant in one of the units) to call the local Enbridge. Enbridge came and found out that there was an issue with the boiler and turned the gas off. The maintenance company ordered a new boiler and attempted to install it two days ago, and at that point we managed to get hot water for 3-6 hours before it went cold again. We the tenants reported this to the maintenance company who came back and discovered that the boiler room had flooded and "the line was blocked" (I'm not sure what this means). Yesterday they had someone come into the building to clean up the flood and since then there has been no movement and as of my writing this, the maintenance company has not responded to messages. This is becoming a huge inconvenience not just to myself but other tenants as well.
I am considering filing a T6 but I have a few questions.
Do I need to wait until the hot water is restored before I file it?
I actually don't know the landlord's address. They seem to be a group of brothers/family members and they're never here (as in, I've seen them maybe once in three years). Legally, can the maintenance company provide me their name(s) and address for the T6 if I ask them. We have no communications with the landlord(s) whatsoever and don't even know their names (we pay our rent directly to the maintenance company/property manager).
My biggest fear is that the landlord(s)/property management will try and find a way to evict me (or renovict) me and my child from our unit if we pursue this, like a form of retaliation. Am I overreacting? Can they legally do this and get away with it?
Any answers, input or experience with this sort of thing would be appreciated. Thank you!
