Why I didn't go to concerts I really wanted to go to

  1. Was really excited to find out Rush was on tour again. Looked up tickets and found out a single ticket cost $800. They were also playing an hour outside the closest major city and an hour and a half from where I live. It was too expensive and too much hassle. I felt taken for granted. Didn't go.

  2. Wanted to see Muse because I was unable to see them on their last tour, when they played at Oakland Arena which is in a city and only 45 minutes from me. I realized they were playing this year in Mountain View, which is an hour and a half from me, and there is absolutely nothing in Mountain View except the Google HQ and the Shoreline Amphitheater. I decided it wasn't worth the road trip. Shoreline Amphitheater is also a very old venue not really set up for contemporary acts and the last time I went, the sound was terrible for the first two opening acts. It's an outdoor venue and it was cold. I passed.

  3. I was excited that Metallica was coming to the Sphere. I'm a member of the fan club and we supposedly had a presale. I thought my presale code would get me a ticket but it did not. I bought a resale ticket on Stubhub for $1,000. I was just informed that although I bought a ticket for Oct. 29, the ticket I am getting is for Oct. 31. I bought a plane ticket and reserved a hotel room. Stubhub was supposed to get back to me in 24 hours with a response but they have not.

None of them care about us. The bands don't care about their fans or they would not let Stubhub and Ticketmaster screw us and they would not charge $800 for a stadium seat when they already have more money anyone could spend in a lifetime. They would also consider that stadiums in the middle of nowhere aren't where people want to travel to. Stubhub and Ticketmaster definitely do not care about us. I don't get it. They aren't selling food or gasoline. Why do they think we will put up with this? I won't. If you treat me like garbage I will no longer pay money for what you are selling.

Successful Suit Against Sex Trafficker

Rock Island woman wins $50 million judgement against alleged sex trafficker

Adriane Moen was a single mother, struggling financially, when, like countless other women, she met a man on a dating app and made a connection.

But what she believed was a romantic relationship soon turned into something darker, according to court records, when the Chicago man she was involved with suggested she start using the website Backpage, which became known as an online hub for sex work until it was shut down by the FBI in 2018.

Soon, he became abusive, forcing her into continuous sex work and eventually taking up to 60% of what she earned, Moen, 49, alleged in a federal civil lawsuit filed in Illinois.

Last month, though, Moen won a $50 million judgment against her alleged sex trafficker in an unusual case that Moen hopes will help pave the way for other survivors of sex trafficking seeking restitution.

“I am basically just grateful that they heard my story and someone believed me and that I was able to finally get some justice,” Moen said in an email to the Tribune. “Honestly, it is justice. I may never get any payment from him but I still got justice in the federal court.”

In the court order, U.S. District Judge Sara Darrow called the ordeal Moen went through “among the most reprehensible possible.”

“The facts of this case are horrifying and Moen suffered significant harm,” Darrow wrote.

Federal and state law allow human trafficking survivors to pursue financial awards in civil courts against those responsible, though often the suits get filed against hotel chains or internet service providers, entities that present better opportunities for survivors and attorneys to collect settlements.

But Moen’s is a rare case of a survivor directly suing her alleged sex trafficker, her attorneys say, calling it the first of its kind in Illinois. And even if she can’t recoup all $50 million, she said, it’s gratifying to see a judge take her side after battling a system that targeted her, rather than her alleged trafficker, with prostitution arrests.

“It is a novel approach to try to find justice and accountability for a survivor who already was really failed by the criminal justice system,” said Elizabeth Payne, legal director of the Chicago Alliance Against Sexual Exploitation.

Moen filed suit in 2025 in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois against a man identified in the record as John Woolridge, who she met on a dating app in 2012, the complaint said.

The Tribune could not reach Woolridge for comment. He did not respond to the complaint in court nor hire a lawyer to participate in the process. The court’s judgment notes that he was served via email and Instagram direct message.

He does not appear to have been charged criminally in connection with Moen’s case.

What unfolded after Moen met Woolridge was a common path for sex trafficking victims: Vulnerable and in need of money, support and resources, Moen began talking to Woolridge every day until they agreed to meet, her complaint says. After they solidified a romantic relationship, he pressured her into sex work, “assuring her that it was the solution to her money problems and that he would protect her,” it said.

“Trafficking isn’t just being locked in a warehouse somewhere,” Moen told the Tribune in a statement. “It can happen with your partner. They see the money aspect and that’s all they want.”

Woolridge posted ads, set the price and then began demanding a percentage of what she earned, the complaint said. When she said she wanted to stop, he became hostile and abusive, it alleged.

Soon, the complaint said, she was forced to see dozens of men each week across multiple states and was subjected to abuse and sexual assault.

“Her hopes of a romantic relationship had descended into a personal hell,” the complaint said.

She was arrested for prostitution in 2013 and 2014, the complaint said.

Though she tried to leave him, she alleged, Woolridge controlled her with violence, threats and manipulation.

By 2015, though, Moen was able to escape the cycle and move in with her father in Moline. She estimated, according to the complaint, that she had handed over around $420,000 to Woolridge.

Update on my last post about a potential Marin scam

I called both businesses and they both said that they did, in fact, send the bills.

It's interesting how many trolls here assumed I am a moron.

As I thought I stated in my post, the issue as I saw it was not that I thought the bills were fakes, but that I had an issue with being billed additional amounts weeks or months after the services, after having paid what I thought were "final" bills.

I am disputing the bill of one of the companies, because the charge was for fixing a situation that I believe they created when they did the initial work. We'll see what happens.

The other company said it's customary for them to send out multiple bills, each for a separate service, even though there were only two visits and I shouldn't have had more than two bills, in my opinion. If a company performs multiple types of work in one visit, in my experience you get one bill for the services because they were all done on the same date. Imagine what it would be like if you had someone remodel your kitchen and they sent you a separate bill for each tile they replaced or each cabinet door they installed. Perhaps this is a new way of doing business, or a unique Marin way of doing business. In past years, in other places, I received an itemized bill for work done on my property, not separate bills for each item.

I don't like the way these companies are doing business, but it's not an imposter scam.

Is this a new Marin scam??

A company that did some work on my property sent me a bill months later for a small amount (less than $100). I was puzzled, as I was pretty sure I'd paid the entire bill. I ignored it at first, assuming it was some type of mistake. They sent me a "reminder" so I decided to just pay it because the amount was so small, and I might want to use them again.

Just a few weeks later, I received a "Past Due" bill in the form of an invoice, from another company that did work on my property. This was for a larger amount. There was no indication on the bill what the bill was for. I'm pretty sure I had paid their entire bill, in two installments. This time, I emailed the billing manager, asking what this bill was for. I received NO RESPONSE. I decided not to pay this bill, because I don't know what it is for.

Is this some type of scam that is going around? It's weird that this happened to me twice, and neither time was it explained to me what this additional bill was for. My guess is a lot of people will pay a small bill even if they don't know what it is for, if it's from a company they did business with, which is what I did the first time.

Exhausted by thefts and scam attempts

I have now fired 3 housecleaners for stealing. Two of them pilfered minor things but the last one stole a valuable item, and, more disturbingly, my set of spare keys. I had to change my locks. That person and one of the others were recommended by neighbors! I now realize my neighbors are elderly, possibly senile, and one is a hoarder. They probably are being robbed blind and just think they misplaced items. It is so depressing that there are so many people in Marin who think it's ok to steal from older people. I'm over 60 but I don't have dementia and I'm not a hoarder.

I managed my parents' estate and found out my father was scammed at one of the local Toyota dealerships. They took advantage of a 92-year-old man. I had to write a negative Yelp review to get a refund.

I decided there needed to be some work done on my parents' condo's kitchen before putting it on the market. The first estimate I got was $8,000. I knew that wasn't right and got a second estimate, which was $4,000. I went with the $4,000 guy and he did an adequate job. Who in their right mind would pay $8,000 for a $4,000 job??

What is going on? Are there this many scammers and thieves because Marin is old? Because Marin is rich? Is something wrong with the culture here? And if anyone knows a housecleaner who isn't a thief, is reliable and speaks basic English, I am interested!

Addendum 6/04: Several people here have assumed I'm a man. Why, because I know when someone is a thief or a scammer?? Makes me wonder what y'all think of women...

Incarcerated women need help

Hopefully this link shows up. It's for Tomieka Johnson, a survivor who is incarcerated. She has been speaking up about the men transferred to her women's prison, and the rape and harassment that has been going on in the prison, from these men.

Do the Pop-Up Shops Offer Dressing Room Space Yet?

I bought the wrong size t-shirt in 2024 because there was nowhere to try it on. It was hanging on a wire hanger, and because it was flat it looked bigger, so I bought a small even though I usually wear a medium. I wore it once and washed it, and even though I didn't dry it completely it shrank and now I can't wear it. It's a shame because it is a unique t-shirt for Blackened Whiskey and I've never seen anyone else with it.

I'm hoping Metallica has learned by now they have to offer a changing space in the Pop-Up shops.
