Colt model clarification

Guys, need some help. I’m about to throw my A1 lower on a 14.5” pencil on a C7 upper…basically classic 723. I also have a BK Firearms A2 upper w/ the 203 cut coming in. Was going to use that on my A1 lower as well. I’ve heard people say that 723s were sometimes configured that way—a2 upper w/ 203 cut barrel over an a1 lower…is that true?

AR15 BCG gas key staking help

Folks, got an upper coming in including a BCG with an unstaked gas key. I’m in Alexandria. Anyone know someone (gunsmith, savvy builder etc) who will stake the gas key for me for a reasonable price that’s local?

Need help!

Friends, panic-bought another lower and upper prior to the VA ban (see attached pics). I chose this H&R M16A1 CAR lower because I thought it would give me versatility down the line to use on clones of an XM177E2, a 653, a 733, and a 723 (I won’t live in VA forever). So now I’m wondering if I really messed up because it’s in “black” finish. Making me think that 177E2s are probably out, but what about 653s, 723s, or 733s? Were they ever black, and not gray? If not, is there any cheap/easy fix?

Next prob…the upper. I was thinking I’d try to find a 14.7” pencil barrel with a P&W and the FSB already attached and swap it onto this upper down the line to make a 723 (I’ve read that A1 lowers and A2 uppers w/ A2 sights and 14.5” pencil barrels DID exist). But the more I look, it’s a) probably beyond my skill level to do on my own, and b) once I buy the barrel and FAB and pay a gun smith, I should just buy another upper.

So to summarize, were they ever black, did I screw up, and what to do?
