My previous post “Ruger VS Tikka” got a lot of traction, and it’s clear based off the replies that the tikka is definitely the superior option. However, 7mmPRC may not be the ideal ammo.

The 308 I mentioned previously is nearly 50 years old and not in great condition from the previous 2 owners, hence my interest in a buying a new rifle. While elk hunting is my main goal in the future, I am also applying for antelope and black bear tags across the country.

I shot a newer .270 and a .223 at 300yd a couple months ago with 4 inch groups so I am confident with more time at the range I can develop my skills further. I’ve heard that the .270 could be underpowered, and I wouldn’t use a .223 for big game.

Any recommendations for a versatile ammo option? Reading reviews only gets me so far, I’d rather hear your personal thoughts and experiences.

I am interested in buying either a Ruger American or a Tikka T3X in 7PRC for long range western hunting. Ive heard that the Tikka is far better, but is the difference great enough to explain the $300-$400 price difference. I’ve only hunted with a 308win for Midwest deer and I am not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to rifles/ammo, I read and watch reviews for most of my info.

Does anyone have advice or thoughts on these two rifles? Thanks
