Super El Niño

Anyone else wondering what's in store for winter in the Northern Hemisphere? My daughter is interested in joining her school cross-country team I think and I'm starting to wonder if there will really be a season this year. I'm remembering a winter not so long ago where there was only a week or so of snow on the ground. I know we just have to wait and find out — I have no idea what to really expect this early — but it's on my mind a lot. I find myself wondering whether I'm just planning for one thing while anticipating another. It's remarkable to me that this is even a possibility to be considering.

Recommended editions of Neoteric poetry other than Catullus?

Does anyone have any recommendations for books on Neoteric Latin poetry that isn't focused on Catullus? Preferably bilingual Latin-English books, especially single authors?

Garlic presses should be called mini ricers.

I was looking at garlic presses online and came across a surprising amount of hate for garlic presses. I admit I don't use them much — I usually just smash and chop them with a knife — but there are some situations where the texture and flavor they produce is useful.

What really surprises me though is the frequency with which people talk about them as unitaskers. They're really mini-ricers or mini-juicers. I've used them often to press ginger, for example, which I almost think they're more useful for than with garlic. I don't see them as absolutely essential in the kitchen, but I think similar things could be said about a lot of other cooking tools.

Thoughts on national (US) declines in test scores?

I'm genuinely curious what teachers think of declines in achievement test scores in recent years, what has been contributing to it. It's really puzzling to me, every explanation I've read doesn't entirely make sense to me, and am interested in what it looks like from teachers' perspectives.

This essay is close to how I feel, although I think the author underestimates the possible effects of digital versus paper testing (I'm not sure you can extrapolate mobile device interaction patterns over the last 8 years from one study in 2018), and misreads immigration (my understanding is that test scores have actually increased overall since the 70s, when immigration started increasing):

Anyone else think it's unusual when people think something is fragrance free when it's clearly not?

I was involved in a discussion of fragrance free products recently and someone started talking about a product as if it were fragrance free when it clearly isn't. Not just "unscented", but clearly scented and marketed as such. In fact, I've been involved in multiple discussions of this same product's added fragrance in terms of what it smells like and so forth, among people who actively seek out fragranced products, to know what they might be getting.

I guess it prompted me to think of times people will start talking about something not having a scent when there's something clearly added, right in the ingredients, that others will comment on. It makes me wonder a bit about perception of scent and what's going on there that some seem to be completely oblivious to fragrance.

I really like this piece and this is one of my favorite video recordings of it (I don't have any relationship with the performer, just wanted to share).
