What goes under a bench?

I have been cutting back an area of my garden and made a nice little shady spot to put a bench in. I am wondering now what to put under it?

I would love to turf it but I'm sure no grass would survive the nearly zero light. I would like something natural if possible so avoiding AstroTurf. Maybe woodchip or another decorative aggregate?

What things have other people tried? Bonus points for cheap and easy to maintain, but really looking for any inspiration.

Flies hang around people making annoying noises because they want to die

I mean would you want to live as a fly? Smashing their faces into windows, burning themselves on light bulbs, following the smell of death. You can see a patern of behaviour emerging.
