Taking off!

Last summer I added 12 new plants to my existing 10, and was pleased & surprised this morning to see how happy a few of them are.

All are doing well, but my Henry E Huntington doubled in height this summer. Yes he is skinny, but I suspect he will fill out as he ages.

Also, me new “Silver Dollar” plants seem to be preparing for a great bloom. I can’t wait to see how things go. Cross fingers.

Franchise Poetry

I’m catching up on episodes/seasons skipped as life got in the way, and I’m struck by the occasional but profound poetry in some episode titles. It’s clear that the writers went HARD sometimes getting a great episode name:

  1. For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky. (My all time favorite, beautiful and meaningful on so many levels.)
  2. The Butcher’s Knife cares not for the Lamb’s Cry.
  3. Wrongs Darker than Death or Night.
  4. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow.
  5. How Sharper Than a Serpent’s Tooth.

What episode titles struck you as amazing (either for their beauty, poetry, or by
layering nuance to that week’s story)?

Thank you, r/Milkweeds!

A few months ago, I asked for advice on how to keep my native fascularis (Narrowleaf) growing under the pressure of monarchs. Your advice “chill out, they will survive” was spot on.

One of the three shredded plants (red circles) have come back already, and the other two have some leaves. Also, it seems to be spreading (blue circles) by itself. Depending on how they do, I’ll clear space as the adjacent hyssups aren’t really my favorites 😂.

What can I do to support a THRIVING milkweed?

I have 5 native milkweed in my Southern California garden - 4 of which have been decimated by the monarch caterpillars. (I have to remove them from my tiny, dying bushes and move them to a neighbor’s THRIVING tropical milkweed.)

I know we should not plant tropical milkweed here, but I am getting frustrated that my attempts to raise native milkweed are getting mowed down by the local butterfly population. I don’t have space or money to buy dozens of plants.

What’s a gardener supposed to do??

Grand Tour: DIY or Package

Hello! I am planning to do the Grand Tour; this includes mostly second class train travel and hotels in the cities listed below.

My question for you all is: “For someone who is comfortable booking things, is it possible to get seats on trains on the fly?”

I would be totally happy to buy the half-fare card myself and DIY the trip, but I would really prefer to travel with a seat (not fond of standing room only). Would I be better off purchasing a package or putting it together myself. Assume cost is not important.

Tip for Hex-Style seed-started flats.

I start seeds in a Hex type flat, and found that dollar-store tongs (in the kitchen section - with the rubber protectors removed) is the exact size to enable quick and easy removal from the flat. No pulling, no squeezing the plastic. Just perfect!

In addition, it is also exactly the right size to remove dirt in prep for the plant.
