Sabrina’s Charisma vs. Olivia’s Emotional Genius

My takes on Sabrina Carpenter and Olivia Rodrigo:

Sabrina Carpenter: She has become extremely good at turning her personality into her brand. Her biggest strength isn't just vocals—it's her charisma, humor, songwriting, and ability to make songs feel effortless. Some people may find the flirty/pop persona repetitive, but she clearly knows exactly what works for her.

Olivia Rodrigo: I think Olivia is the stronger songwriter emotionally. Her songs feel more vulnerable and specific, especially when she writes about heartbreak, anger, insecurity, and growing up. She also has a more naturally dramatic rock/pop sound.

The controversial part: Sabrina currently feels more commercially polished, while Olivia feels more artistically raw. That doesn't mean one is more talented—it means they're selling two very different versions of pop.

Their old “feud” is overrated. A lot of the internet drama around them became bigger than the actual relationship between the two artists.

aespa After Supernova: Can They Top Themselves?

aespa's 2024 run was insane. “Supernova,” “Armageddon,” and “Whiplash” put them in a league of their own, and “Supernova” became their first No. 1 on Korea's Circle Digital Chart.

Their biggest problem is consistency. When aespa gets the right song, they're incredible. But their discography has always been hit-or-miss.

“Supernova” was the perfect aespa song. Weird, catchy, futuristic, experimental, but still accessible. That's the balance they should protect.

“Whiplash” worked, but it was much simpler. Some listeners loved the club sound, while others felt the song lacked the impact of “Supernova.”

Their newer direction is controversial. Recent releases have received criticism for feeling less distinctive than their 2024 peak.

Their concept used to be a major advantage. The KWANGYA/metaverse lore made them feel completely different from other groups. They've gradually separated the music from the lore, which makes the group easier to understand but arguably less unique.

Karina and Winter are huge stan attractors, but Giselle and Ningning are essential to the group's overall sound. Reducing aespa to just Karina/Winter is missing what makes the group work.

Their biggest enemy is actually themselves. After “Supernova,” the standard became ridiculously high. Even a decent comeback now gets judged against one of K-pop's biggest recent hits.

BABYMONSTER THOUGHTS AND CONTROVERSIAL OPINION

  • They may be more talented than their music currently shows. Their vocal/rap ability is strong, but some songs don't fully showcase it.
  • Ahyeon gets a lot of attention, sometimes to the point where other members can feel overshadowed.
  • The YG sound can feel repetitive. The heavy hip-hop influence is part of their identity, but it can also make their music feel predictable.
  • Their debut rollout was messy. The long pre-debut period and changes around the lineup created a lot of confusion and high expectations.
  • They are sometimes compared too heavily to BLACKPINK. Because they're under YG, people naturally compare them, but constantly doing so can prevent BABYMONSTER from developing their own identity.
  • Their biggest strength might also be their biggest problem: they have too many standout members. With strong vocalists, rappers, and performers, line distribution and screen time can become controversial among fans.
