I am writing a fic with a seriously OP character, and while researching in the wiki realised: the world before the Doom must have been totally different. Like, SO different.
We see magic return in ASOIAF, but while the freehold was in power with hundreds if not thousands of dragons, magic must have been far stronger. It's a world where valyrian steel, while precious, is nowhere as sought after as in 298 AC. Glas candles are burning, water and fire magic an everday occurrence. Lords and Kings in Westeros must have always had the thought in the back of their minds that the overpowered and magical realm could fuck them up any time. Trade with the valyrian cities across the narrow sea must have been wondrous (and terrifying).
So many (most, really) people in 298 AC think of any kind of magic as fancy tales and legends and myths. If Old Nans great-great-...-grandma was telling Brans great-great-...-grandpa stories about wargs, these things would have sounded far more possible. Maybe they even were active wargs and skinchangers below the Wall with stronger magic in the world.
And when I then look at my fic, I think... well, he is for sure OP, but 600 years earlier it wouldn't have been by much.

I have now read a bunch of stories where Jon Connington stands against a Jon (Aemon/Daemon/Daeron/Jaeheris/whatever) that is going for the Iron Throne. In principle that is okay with me, he might see (f)Aegon as the rightful heir.
The thing is... he is mostly portrait as very stupid. Like, too-stupid-to-tie-his-shoes stupid. In the one I'm (re-)reading right now, "Father of Dragons", he stands by Aegon who is so obviously nothing like either of his supposed birthparents that even Varys thinks him a pretender. He is weirdly misogynistic (more so than most characters in the story), he knows Jon is legit but just... ignores that and still sticks to Aegon. He even hopes for Jon's death. All that is accompanied by absolute delusions in his POV, like that they can prevail against six dragons, that "Jon Targayen of course will have to give up his dragons" and everything else to his brother.
And that stuff happens in so so many fics I've read.
Are there any fics where he is not gone to a point of absolute madness? I know he has raised Aegon, that he still loves Rhaegar. But he must be at least a bit smart and cunning to have survived and done what he did.

Jon in the books is remarkably different to Jon in the show. He is very smart, exceedingly fair and dutiful, he is cunning and sarcastic, sometimes a bit ruthless and he is very ambitious. He doesn’t know about his parentage yet, but will soon. Taking his book character into account, I’m thinking about what it will do to his perception of Ned Stark. Will he forgive his uncle never telling him about his mother and father, trusting him so little in this? Or only wanting to tell him once he can’t be a danger to Robert Baratheon? Not even telling him that his mother had loved him? Taking away his chance to get to know Aemon as family, a great-great-great uncle? To choose to go to Essos instead of the Wall, to look for the other side of his family? Will Jon feel betrayed? Will he question the love of his 'father' Ned Stark?
I know that Ned chose all this to protect Jon, but purely from Jon’s perspective, what was too much? What will he be thankful for and what will he resent? Especially as he has always suffered under the thought of being a bastard, a stain on Lord Starks honour.
