Today's slides are from August of 1960 and show the start of the family vacation the photographer archived. In arranging the slides for scanning I noticed that they have all been numbered by hand, many of them are not in the correct box, and there are some numbers missing. I spent time yesterday putting them in order since someone took the time to number them, they wanted the story told in that order.

Notes: The ship featured in the slides is the S.S. Maasdam (IV), the fourth Holland America Line vessel to carry the name.

Pic 9 gives us a look at the photographer behind the camera in a "selfie". We can also see that she is using a waist-level viewfinder.

I have not altered these in any way. Earlier posts I did some manual editing to adjust the white levels and used a native auto-focus feature on a few slides that were hard to see. I've since learned that the auto-focus used AI so from now in I will not edit the photos in any way. You will see them directly out of the scanner.

Tomorrow's slides will be from Box 2 labeled "S.S. Maasdam, Frank, Mike, Stewards, Nick"

Advice for tooth issues.

Before anyone asks, yes we've been to the vet.

Yesterday after dinner, Xero started showing signs of pain (shivers, licking, yelping when I took his shirt off over his head) and then about an hour later the right side of his face and neck started swelling. I called my vet and the emergency line (after hours) evaluated the situation and said he could be seen in the morning.

Today at the vet they evaluated him and found nothing obvious in his mouth like an abscess, no blood or anything, and his gums looked fine. He is missing some adult teeth as expected, but being only a year old the doctor wants to get X-rays to rule out an impacted tooth. He's scheduled for surgery next Tuesday for his neuter so they said they'd get X-rays then instead of having to sedate him twice.

He does have an ear infection on that side as well, so he's getting meds for that, and they gave him an NSAID for pain/swelling. I've also switched him over to 100% soft food now instead of the mix we did before.

Any advice on what to expect? I was expecting tooth issues when I got him since they have the FOXI3 gene and now that we are dealing with it I'd just like to know if anyone else has dealt with the face swelling and what you did to make your baby as comfortable as possible. My poor Xero looks like a stroke victim right now. 😔

Cadmium glow?

I'm picking this up tomorrow along with two other pieces I bought in an estate auction. I'm hoping this might have some Cadmium in it, what do y'all think?

The verdict?

The base GLOWS. It's like the dream lamp I never knew I needed. Worth the 5 hour round trip to get it!

Heat thief 😂

I'm currently healing from a dislocated rib and a torn intercostal muscle, and I use a heating pad several times a day to help. Xero usually snuggles up beside me for warmth but now he has decided that the space between the heating pad and my ribs is the best place to be. I guess I'll worry about my healing later. 😂🙄

Listed as Uranium Glass

Local auction house has this listed as Uranium glass antique oil lamp, but with no glow pics. What do you guys think?

Another mystery piece.

This is another $4 piece I picked up at an estate sale last week that was labeled "Murano?" (actually it said morano? 😄). I've seen glass like this from Murano, but not in this form. I am obsessed with the bright yellow color 💛

Does anyone have a piece like this? Is it a candy dish?

Murano or no?

Hi gals and guys!

I have had the clear bowl for a while and absolutely love it. It was purchased out of a high end estate sale last year where it was marked as Murano.

I saw the red one at an estate sale this week and it was marked as "Murano?" It was $4 so I grabbed it to take home and compare. It's chunkier and more abstract, and the Bullicante is not as precise.

Any ID information on either one? I love them no matter the maker. ❤️

My son left to live with his dad without warning.

My usually responsible and mature son (17) was being paid to house sit while I was away on a 2 week vacation. While I was gone he refused to follow some of the instructions I gave to him regarding the care of the dogs and we had a rare argument. For the rest of the trip he barely answered texts, and refused to answer any phone calls. When I returned home I found my dogs closed in the laundry room with no food, the floor covered in waste, and the door and trim were shredded showing where they had scratched in vain to get out. My plants were dead/dying and 3 of my 4 fish tanks were filled with dead fish and shrimp. What I didn't find was my son. He had packed all of his things and moved 9 hours away to his dad's house. His dad came and picked him up and now they've filed a motion to modify custody.

I'm not going to fight the custody modification; I fought hard in my divorce to make sure my son got what he wanted then. I'm not going to fight against it now. The absurd part in this is that they are filing it as an emergency modification which requires proof of abuse or neglect so they are making things up to make it seem like I verbally abuse my kid and ignore him. Both are far from the truth, so the motion will be denied, but I had to pay my attorney another $4000 retainer so she can defend me in court. Even though I'm agreeing to the modification. Oh, and now I have to pay my ex child support, even though I was always the stay at home mom, as my ex required of me since it's "part of his culture".

Does anyone out there relate? Tell me your story so my brain can stop telling me that I'll never see my son again. 😞

Dinner is the first thing I've eaten in 2 days. Broccoli and chicken with honey. Yay for me

My finds in the last week.

I had some fun last weekend and found some fun stuff. Just now got them unpacked and had to take pics immediately. Now I need to clean them up and remove the tags.

Frosted amberina vase?

I snagged this in an estate sale a couple of months ago never realizing that it is UV reactive. I was showing a friend my Uranium Glass and my light hit this vase and it lit up too. Anyone know anything about it?

Local Uranium Glass seltzer bottles

I picked these up from a local estate auction today, my first uranium glass seltzer bottles! The etching is from Spitzer & Co / Scranton, PA with a American flag on it. I've seen them from Europe, but didn't expect to see some from a local shop!

Found a surprise in my antique store inventory today.

As I was unpacking some stuff in today I got from an estate sale, I shook this vase and heard something was in it. Flipped the vase over but it wouldn't come out. After a closer look I found this unfortunate inhabitant. It must've found his way inside some how and couldn't get back out.

I think it's a toad, but I'm not so great at identifying so please correct me if I'm wrong!

Nightmare pet sitting experience left us all traumatized. Advice needed.

TLDR: My son neglected my dogs while I was on vacation and left them closed in the laundry room, only letting them out a couple of times a day for bathroom breaks for over 2 weeks. How do I help my dogs deal with the trauma from this?

Full story:

My previously responsible and well behaved son (17) agreed to house-sit while I went on a vacation for 16 days. He usually spends the summer with his dad, but when he learned it was a paying job and that a stranger (to him) would be staying in our house, he asked to take the job for a discounted rate. His dad gave permission so I agreed, thinking that this was the perfect set up. I gave him instructions several times before I left, letting him know he could not ignore them all day, and that Xero had to sleep in the bed with him. He always rolled his eyes but never said anything negative about it. Two days into the trip I asked him how Xero was handling my being gone since this is the first time I was away overnight from Xero, and he's only just now turning 1yo (my black lab, Liberty, is 7 and handles my short absences without issues). My son said that Xero slept in the laundry room with Liberty and that he did fine. I became confused and upset because this was not my instructions, and absolutely not the way my son usually responds to me. His excuse was, "I didn't realize you really meant it, you didn't make it clear enough". I called him, made my instructions clear and then hung up. I was overlanding in Alaska so I didn't always have cell service (part of the reason for the trip), but when I did I checked in, asked for pics, etc. He responded appropriately and didn't show any signs that anything was wrong. When I got home my son had packed his things and left. My fish and houseplants were dead, my outside garden was overgrown and neglected, and my dogs were closed in my laundry room without food and minimal water.

My heart is broken in so many ways, but I'm focused on making my house a safe space again for my dogs. Liberty took about 48 hours until she settled in to the usual routine, but Xero wakes up crying still, even in the bed with me. I can't leave the house without him, and that's okay temporarily, but eventually my work will pull me away for a few hours where he can't join me. We are spending all day together now, and he's sleeping in the bed at my feet as usual, but has woken up with a "yelp" and then curls up under my chin to sleep like he did as a puppy. I am having to buy new beds for them since their other ones were torn up and urinated on, and I've cleaned the laundry and surrounding rooms thoroughly with Nature's Miracle to get rid of germs and lingering smells that may trigger any bad memories. What other things can I do to help Xero (and me) through this?

Please, no disrespectful comments regarding my son. It took me 5 days just to be able to write this because it's so hard to think about him right now, the betrayal is too fresh. Just know that this is shocking behavior coming from him and we've never had issues like this before.

This estate sale took all my money today.

As a collector of art glass and vintage pottery, I have saved for such a day as this. The owner of an antique store passed away and all of her inventory and personal collection went up in a local estate auction. This is just half of what I came home with, I ran out of countertop space so the other pieces are still in boxes. I will never pass up a swing vase, the little fenton bowl is in pristine condition, and the four hex plates were a steal at $1/ea.

The large blue platter glows well, can y'all tell me if it's uranium or not?

Xero's love of plants

Xero LOVES eating plants. So far he's destroyed an African Violet, 2 day lilies, a banana tree and a rubber plant. I've dog proofed the house plants now, but when we go outside he makes a beeline for the garden. Today he jumped the little fence around the tomatoes and started to chew on a leaf. I quickly grabbed him up, pulled the leaves out of his mouth and lightly smacked his bottom. I've never smacked him before, I'm actually surprised that I did it. I guess the added danger of it being a nightshade plant increased my anxiety, it felt like smacking a toddler's hand if they tried to touch a hot stove.

Y'all, the drama that ensued is Oscar worthy. He cried real tears and will not leave my side. I feel like I broke his heart. Now I'm here giving him treats and love like a sucker. 😆

How do you discipline your Xolo babies? I know they are extra sensitive emotionally (me too, no shade) but I need to be able to discipline him when he's doing something dangerous.

My first Uranium Glass Score!

I'm so excited to finally post my first uranium glass, and it actually fits with this month's theme, Pairs and Multiples! My pics aren't great, I need a better light!

4 Weston Watermelon cocktail glasses and 8 wine glasses. I scored them at a local estate sale for $11! Now I'm obsessed.
