What it’s like: Selling on Vestiaire
Allow me to set the scene for you:
You have one new message in your inbox :
“ what’s the lowest price you will take for this?”
Make an offer has been disabled. You thought this was implied.
Both you and the potential buyers of Vestiaire can see that you started this item out at say $400 and you have it marked down to 170 so a generous already 50% off and you’ve disallowed the offers to keep coming in. At this point after fees, you might as well keep it.
The buyer asks if you’ll take “$150 for it , you kindly remind the buyer that you’re already making less than $150 on your end, and they remind you that there’s taxes and shipping and authentication fees in some case cases tariffs so they need you to go lower and take it out of your cut
You say my apologies, but I cannot do that - oh well, they tried . It can’t hurt right. At least they did it privately. Also 150 is so close to 170. Can’t you find a discount code for 10% and get it that way?
Scenario number two the second buyer no need to ask if you will lower the price on an item you’ve disabled the offer feature on. They tell you the price you will take by just writing you a message with the price they are willing to pay. You don’t respond because you don’t know how to respond to a number not even a question- just a number.
And this buyer sees and notes that you haven’t responded and decides to comment on your item that you need to take less for it because they need the item cleaned and to take that into account and not the fact that you paid $1200 for this item brand new and 400 was reasonable - because the buyer messaged you $150 and told you that’s what you will take and now everyone else gets to read that’s what your items worth according to a rude and crazy person on a comment you can’t delete
So you withdraw your listing so the conversation & that buyer go away and you start all over again and that’s the beauty of VC is sometimes you don’t get the price of the listing right or you get harassed or it doesn’t hit the algorithm right and you can just start over again without fear of suspension like over on Poshmark
Could they make offers binding? Yes, but it wouldn’t help because they’d have to advertise their fees before an offer is accepted and they will never do that and also offers would never get accepted if full fee schedule was disclosed - so it is the way it is.
The other day I had just listed a fendi baguette in really good condition and it went live at $900. Buyers could make offers on the listing and within minutes I get a message “I’ll give you $250 for it” I said “sure thing, go ahead and make an offer through the app on the listing, I’ll accept!”
