We NEED a nickname for our unborn baby. His name is George.

Hello MaMas, we are expecting our little boy next year and I feel extremely unsettled that we don’t yet have a nickname for him! His name will be George. I know it’s a classic name and not long at all, but please give me ALL the nicknames you can possibly think of. It’s absolutely necessary that he have a nickname immediately upon birth. Thanks in advanced! ❤️‍🩹

I love old fashioned names and I’m considering Carol or Early for my son. They’re not too feminine right?

Ok mammas, I’m considering names for my son, and while I don’t want to set my son up for a lifetime of bullying, I really love the name Carol. I don’t know of anyone named Carol, it’s so incredibly uncommon and unique. And I really want it to be a masculine name, so pleeeeease tell me it comes across as masculine?

I also love the name Early. A tried and true vintage classic that everyone has heard of, right? Plus the meaning is so perfect. “The Early bird gets the worm!” as they say. Plus I hope my son will be born premature and so I can get more attention, which this name would be perfect because everyone who asks about his name would get to hear about how he was born Early and hopefully get me some recognition for birthing him.

So what do you think? Please only comment if you know only men who have been named Carol. Don’t mention any boomer-aged women. And only comment if you’re going to reinforce my echo chamber and tell me that these names are classic and masculine and perfect for a boy.

Does anyone have a name that isn’t unheard of, but IS uncommon for someone of their age?

Excluding people who have chosen their own names, does anyone have a name that falls into that category? Maybe a name that is unusual now but was common say in the 1800s? Or maybe your parents named you something that ended up being a huge name trend later on? I’m interested in hearing stories!

How do native anglophones pronounce Helena?

I’ve noticed Helena climbing in the ranks on the US charts. I’m realizing there are more ways to pronounce this name than I previously thought. At first sight with no other context, how would you pronounce Helena?

A) HEL-leh-nuh
B) hel-LEH-nuh
C) hel-LEEN-uh
D) hel-LAY-nuh
E) Another way? Please elaborate!

If you could also include your region of the world, such as North America, Oceania, etc. that would be much appreciated!

If you’re not a native anglophone, feel free to chip in with your first language!

What ever happened to…just naming your kid what they will be called?

EDIT: Guys. I’m not saying nicknames are a new thing. I’m also not bashing anyone who goes by Jen instead of Jennifer, etc. I’m talking about how I have an acquaintance who named her baby Peridot (pronounced pair-uh-dough, for your information) and acts offended if you call the kid anything but Dotty, or my cousin who named her kid Marceline but from day 1 has said “call her Mack.”

My brother has long said his pet peeve in life is when someone names their child one thing, but insists they be called another. At first I thought he was a bit pedantic for this but recently it’s starting to get on my nerves too. Sure, “it’s not hurting anyone” “just let people do what they want” and “if I wanna name my kid Megatron it’s none of your biz” but why?

It seems like especially in recent years this has become a huge trend. You need to announce to everyone what you’d baby’s legal name will be, but then insist that they be called by some (usually strange and unrelated) nickname.

I have some family who just had a boy and at the hospital announced, “His name is Gavin, but we’d prefer he’d be called Gus. Just Gus.” Then why didn’t you name him Gus??? And who ever heard of Gus being derived from Gavin?????

This is far from the only case I have encountered but it has left me confused. It used to be nicknames were kind of picked up later in life based on personality, an inside joke, or a sibling mispronouncing the name. Why are parents giving their kids rigid (and kinda stupid nicknames) from the cradle???

If we name our Lutheran son Martin Luther, would people just assume we named him after Martin Luther?

We are a few weeks away from baby number 5 and love the name Martin with middle name Luther. All our kids have traditional Lutheran names. I like the name Martin, and Luther is my husband’s favorite, but we would be annoyed if everyone assumed he was named after the reformer. Curious whether people would assume he’s named after the reformer instead of the many other famous Martin Luthers out there, such as Martin Luther the King and Martin Luther the King Jr. Thoughts?

How to part with my Pure Ice collection?

It kinda pains me but I’ve come to the realization that it’s time to re-home my Pure Ice collection. I have 150+ polishes and I’m not sure how to do it. For those who have sold their entire collection, insight would be highly welcome. Do I list them all individually? Sell as a lot? Sell in smaller bundles?

My priority isn’t making the most money. I see sellers charging insane rates for these which is kinda predatory imo. I want to make sure they all get sold over the next 3 months (I’m on a time crunch) and I’d prefer not to have polishes left over because it would just make me sad seeing an incomplete collection.
