BMOQ Mod 1 Weekend Option for Air Reserve Candidates (GTA / Nearby Units)

Hi everyone,

I'm looking into Air Reserve officer positions in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and nearby reserve units, but I'm getting conflicting information online regarding basic qualification training schedules.

Is there a weekend-only option available for BMOQ Mod 1 for Air Reserve members?

I understand that BMOQ Mod 2 is typically a full-time commitment, but I wanted to clarify how Mod 1 is structured for part-time/weekend reservists in the area.

Any insights or recent experiences from current members or recruiters would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Starting BMOQ next week — nervous about the FORCE test (Sandbag Drag & 20m Rushes). Advice from anyone who started with average fitness?

Hi everyone,

I’m starting BMOQ next week! Mentally, I feel ready and excited to jump in, but physically, I’m feeling a fair bit of anxiety about Week 1.

Over the last two months, I’ve been trying my absolute best to train and get in shape. Balancing a full-time job and being a mom to an infant meant squeezing in gym time whenever humanly possible—it’s been tough, but I’ve really pushed myself to my limit given my schedule.

That being said, I know my fitness is still a work in progress:

Current Strengths/Weaknesses: My leg strength is decent (good with squats), but upper body strength is a real struggle—I still really struggle with standard push-ups.

Main Concerns: I’m especially nervous about the Week 1 FORCE evaluation, particularly the sandbag drag and the 20m shuttle rushes.

For anyone who joined with average or below-average fitness levels and successfully made it through BMOQ:

How did you find the Week 1 FORCE test, and how did your body adapt as the course went on?

Do you have any tips or mental strategies for powering through the sandbag drag and shuttle rushes when fatigue hits?

Any general advice or encouragement for surviving the physical demands early on?

I’d truly appreciate any guidance, tips, or reassurance from those who have been in my shoes. Thank you so much in advance for your time and help!

Heading to BMOQ in a week with a 2-year-old at home — looking for advice/encouragement from CAF parents

Hi everyone,

I’m heading off to BMOQ in Quebec in just about a week, and as the departure date gets closer, the reality is really starting to hit me hard.

I have a 2-year-old son who is deeply attached to me, and we’ve never been apart before. Every time I look at him right now, it breaks my heart a little, and the emotional weight of leaving him is tough. At the same time, I feel so incredibly grateful and excited for this opportunity—joining the CAF has been a dream of mine for a long time, and I’m so proud to be taking this step.

My family is based in Toronto, so traveling back on weekends from Quebec isn't really realistic or practical. To prepare, I’ve been pushing myself to train as hard as I possibly can—both physically and mentally—so that I’m ready for the training demands. But managing the emotional side of being away from my toddler is definitely my biggest hurdle right now.

To all the CAF moms and parents who have gone through this:

How did you manage the emotional strain and distance during basic?

What helped your little ones stay connected with you while you were away?

Any advice or mindset tips for getting through those initial tough weeks?

I would be so grateful for any advice, personal stories, or words of wisdom from those who have been in my shoes. Thank you so much in advance for your support!

Electrolytes with EAA

Are electrolytes with EAA okay during BMOQ? Or just plain electrolytes?

BMOQ Watch Recommendations

Hey everyone,

I’m heading off to BMOQ soon and need to pick up a reliable watch. I’ve heard plenty of stories about gear getting absolutely destroyed, so I want to make sure I get something that can take a beating.

What are your go-to watch recommendations for basic? Is it smarter to go ultra-cheap or spend a bit more on a basic G-Shock?

Essential features? I'm assuming a strong backlight, 24-hour mode, and a solid alarm are non-negotiable.

Also, I have a quick question regarding smartwatches. I know cellular/smartwatches are prohibited during garrison training at CFLRS. But what happens after basic?

Are smartwatches still heavily restricted once you move on to trade training and regular work hours?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

BMOQ -DEO Pay

Hello. As an Officer Cadet, while undergoing basic training, will we be compensated according to the Second Lieutenant payscale, as outlined in the offer letter, or as an Officer Cadet? I have received conflicting information regarding this matter and would appreciate clarification. Thank you.

BMOQ Prep: Using Creatine/Protein for the next 2 months, then stopping for CFLRS?

Hey everyone,

I’m a female cadet (70kg, 154cm) heading to BMOQ in exactly two months. Right now, I’m pushing myself as hard as I can to make sure I’m exceeding the fitness standards, but I’m feeling the pressure.

My gym trainer suggested I start taking protein supplements and creatine monohydrate to maximize my recovery and strength gains over these next 8 weeks.

I know that these supplements aren't permitted during the early phases of training at CFLRS. My main questions are:

>For anyone who took creatine/protein right up until ship-out day and had to stop cold turkey, did you notice a massive drop-off in your performance or recovery during the first few weeks of indoc?

>Is it worth using them for a short 2-month window just to build a better baseline, or should I train purely on regular whole foods so my body is already used to it?

Would love to hear from anyone who has been through this or has advice on managing recovery during the final stretch of prep. Thanks!

Block Leave Info

Hello.

I am seeking clarification regarding block leave during the Christmas period. I am currently enrolled with the CAF and am scheduled to join BMOQ in August. Assuming everything proceeds smoothly, I am considering taking a vacation during Christmas. Please looking about the typical duration of leave granted during that time and how vacation days can be combined? Additionally, I would appreciate knowing how many vacation days I might accrue by December.

I apologize, as I had made preliminary vacation plans for that period prior to my enrollment. I fully understand the responsibilities associated with the CAF, but I am simply inquiring if it might still be possible to stick to my Christmas plans.

As I am enrolled as AERE, if my BMOQ concludes by late October or November, how are vacation plans typically managed?

I would be grateful if anyone could provide insights into how vacation and block leave generally operate.
