Sheetz gas station proposed at Eastfield Rd & Prosperity Church Rd — neighbors are organizing in opposition (we already have FIVE gas stations!)

I wanted to bring something happening in our area to the attention of the Charlotte/Huntersville community. I live two blocks from this proposed development so it's very personal to me, my family, and my neighbors.

A Sheetz gas station is being proposed for the corner of Eastfield Rd & Prosperity Church Rd, and the rezoning is currently moving through the process.

I know there’s already a lot of development happening around here — the construction behind across the street is expected to become a McDonald’s and Taco Bell. We can't stop every development project, nor should we. But I do think it's worth asking whether another gas station is really the best use for this particular corner, especially when there are already 5 gas stations within a 2 mile radius of this spot.

And to be clear: I actually like Sheetz. This isn't about being anti-Sheetz. It's about whether this location is the right place for another gas station and what our community could get instead.

A group of Eastfield Ridge neighbors have put together a small campaign website and petition to raise awareness and encourage City Council to deny the proposed rezoning:

If you live anywhere in Charlotte (particularly Huntersville or District 4 - University area), please take a look, sign if you agree, and share it with anyone who might be affected. Even if you don't live in this area, I'd genuinely be interested in hearing what other Charlotte residents think about the proposed development.

We're also looking for neighbors who want to help with things like:

  • Door-to-door/community outreach
  • Flyers
  • Yard signs (printed or homemade?)
  • Organizing neighborhood meetups
  • Getting the word out online

If you're interested in helping, feel free to comment or send me a DM.

We're your neighbors, too, and we're just trying to make sure the people who actually live here have a voice in what happens at this intersection.

PSA: If you're not receiving Shopify 2FA text messages and use Google Voice, check your Google Voice Spam folder!

I just spent days trying to regain access to my Shopify account because I wasn't receiving any of my 2FA codes and I had used up all my recovery codes. I even talked with Stripe engineers at 2am to try and solve this problem (bless them, they were super helpful) and seven different Shopify Account Security reps to try to resolve this issue. There is very little room for other verification processes when it comes to this, so if you are reading this and you don't currently have an issue with logging in to your account I highly suggest you take the time to set up multiple verification methods like SMS and authenticator app, AND generate new recovery codes and save them somewhere safe (I save my codes in the note section of my business' card in the Contacts app!).

It turns out Google Voice has its own Spam folder, and somehow every Shopify verification text had been filtered there. I had no idea this folder even existed until Shopify Support happened to mention it.

As soon as I found it, there were all of my missing verification codes waiting for me. I was able to log in immediately, update my phone number, and switch to an authenticator app as a backup.

Hopefully this saves someone else a lot of frustration.

My original issue was that I had been trying to switch my phone number from the Google Voice number (because I wasn't getting the 2FA codes) to my regular cell phone number. But in order to make that switch, you need a 2FA code. Go figure. The process to "recover your account" in this scenario involves a Stripe verification process. The funny part about this is that the entire process must be completed before Stripe is even aware of the information - the "process" is entirely managed by Shopify. So when I was uploading my driver's license photos and then was asked to take a selfie, it glitched out and froze. Every single time. Literally I tried this weeks ago, on a different device, on a different wifi network, then again on just cellular, I did everything imaginable to try and get through this process and take the damn selfie and nothing worked. I would have been eternally stuck if my Google Voice did not in fact have a spam folder waiting for me to discover.

Hopefully this helps someone searching for the same problem in the future!

TAO Can't Log In to ACE Portal – ACE Support Unable/Unwilling to Help for Almost 2 Months

Hoping someone here has run into this before and can point us in the right direction.

Our Trade Account Owner (TAO) has been unable to log in to the ACE Portal for nearly two months. I'm trying to help with our IEEPA refund process which is why I've been trying to help with this whole mess. We've submitted support requests and I've personally called the ACE Help Desk every business day for the last two weeks (literally calling at 9am and by the time I was leaving at 5pm I was STILL waiting with the stupid hold music). Unfortunately, I have never once gotten through to a live person.

At this point we're stuck in a loop where we can't access the account, can't get support, and can't seem to reach anyone who can help resolve the issue.

For clarification, our TAO is receiving notifications/emails related to their ACE account but they cannot login and are getting this error (we've tried everything we know how to fix the error including try logging in from other devices, on other networks, and getting IT involved.....nothing). See the error message below, this is screenshotted from within the instruction guide which has not helpful in trying to get this fixed.

Has anyone experienced a TAO login problem like this? Were you able to get it resolved, and if so, what finally worked? Is there another contact, escalation path, or agency resource we should be trying?

I know everyone is busy, but we're getting pretty desperate for a solution. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

First Time International Convention for a Nonprofit - Flooring?!

I run a small nonprofit that recently has been growing at lightning speed. It's an awesome time to be involved and I'm one of the founders. We are attending an international convention that's directly related to our mission and we're super excited. We have a good idea of a booth design that is modern, attractive, and very different from the other booths at the convention. Think, "Apple store meets clinical meets cozy, modern boutique vibes". We offer bereavement services, resources, and keepsakes for families experiencing baby loss, so the vibe is very important. It's an inline 10x10 exhibit (10' pipe & drape at the back, and 3' on both sides). This convention is local (20 minutes away) so anything goes in terms of what we can bring. The booth only cost $900 to secure. We're hoping to keep our total budget under $2,000 and ideally have a setup that can be replicated at future events as well (3 big conventions slated for next year, if all goes well at this first one). As of right now, we have no other budgeted marketing needs besides paper marketing + new vinyl for our step & repeat banner frame to use as a better backdrop. It's a 3 day convention for 5 hours each day.

My biggest question is the requirement that all exhibits must have flooring. They don't specify what kind and I have no idea what the best route is for us to pursue. The prices for foam flooring tiles to rent is around $700, so my goal is to find a solution that we own that is <$300. I know the convention flooring is concrete. My first thoughts are:

  • Roll out vinyl (no underlayment, but it's cheap....but maybe this is sticky and not a good idea?)
  • Foam interlocking tiles (plain, or wood grain?)
  • Rug (either a 10x10 or figuring out how to make a, 8x10 rug work by pushing the missing 2' towards the back where our backdrop will be). This option is less than ideal if we attend future events bc shipping a rug is ridiculous, but we plan on attending events closer to home so if it requires shipping/flights we might just rent flooring for that event.
  • Other suggestions?

If I got plain foam interlocking tiles in white or gray (~$140 + $30 carrying case = $170) and add a nice neutral but cozy 8x10 rug (like this rug, $99) I'm thinking we could find a rug that is similar to our primary brand color, a pale mint green, which would tie things together nicely since a lot of the booth is leaning towards mostly white elements. This would make the flooring comfortable but also cozy and more durable (and flexible, because I can use just the rug if a venue doesn't have a flooring requirement, or just the tiles if I need flooring but can't bring the rug).

All thoughts and suggestions are highly appreciated! I'm meeting with a relative soon to discuss some of these ideas but I thought this would be a good place to start and maybe nix 1-2 options off my list.
