I think it's to increase streaming watch time when the film is released on one of the big streaming service that made the movie. It makes the movies so horrible to watch in the theater though.

Just watched the Sheep Detective last night with my kids and had they added like 20 minutes of fluff (no pun intended) at the end of the film.

Also the Little Mermaid remake that came out a couple years ago was like 2 hours and 20 minutes and had the seagull sing a solo song for some reason. I think they've been doing this for a while.
