Citizen Ana-Digi Temp 8982 – dead A2, intermittent A1 stalling, specialist repair advice sought
Hi all,
I recently picked up an original early-1980s Citizen Ana-Digi Temp, calibre 8982, and I’m trying to work out the best route to getting it properly repaired.
A fresh battery has been fitted and most of the watch is still remarkably functional. The digital timekeeping is accurate, both LCD displays work, and the thermometer, alarm/buzzer, dual-time and stopwatch functions all operate.
The faults are:
A2 multifunction analogue dial: completely stationary in SEC, ALM, Dual Time and Stopwatch modes. It also does not move or twitch in manual A2 adjustment mode.
A1 analogue dial: adjusts and runs, but I’ve confirmed that it intermittently stalls while the digital time remains accurate. In one test it stayed correctly synchronised for several hours, then later fell roughly 8–10 minutes behind.
Illuminator pusher: the lower-left L button is physically seized with no travel, so I can’t yet tell whether the lamp itself still works.
Citizen UK have confirmed that the model is obsolete and they no longer have parts available. Several conventional watchmakers I’ve contacted have also declined because they don’t work on vintage electronic/ana-digi movements.
I’m wondering whether the analogue side may simply need a thorough clean/service after 40+ years, although I appreciate A2 could also have a coil/contact or other electrical fault.
I’m not planning to dismantle it myself — I’d rather preserve the large amount of functionality that still works. I’m mainly hoping to hear from anyone who has worked on a Citizen 8980/8981/8982 before, or who knows a UK/European specialist willing to diagnose and repair these, including using donor parts if needed.
Any experience or leads would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks!
