How much for a setup and restring (UK)

Hi all,

I’ve been quoted £160 to setup and restring two relatively new guitars in London, is this price is in line with the current market?

I know London is expensive, just curious to hear how much people would normally pay for this service in the various areas of the city.

Thanks

Hey there,

Firstly, I wanted to thank everyone who contributes to this forum and reptime.help page. I have spent many hours gaining a basic education on the world of Rep watches, which I honestly didn't know anything about before. All the comments I read every day indirectly help me feel more oriented and slightly more confident.

AsI still have much to learn, I plan to gather some thoughts before eventually pulling the trigger on my first rep watch. I was interested in the 124060, which is one of my all-time favourites, and I am glad it is mostly rated NWBIG. I was initially thinking of getting a VSF, but I am quite tempted by some prices I am seeing around from TDs for the ARF factory model. Moreover, frequently on this forum I am reading positives about ARF (and perhaps some contradicting information over most recent VSF, perhaps due to high demand, being the most popular factory).

I wanted to know if the ARF 124060 is considered NWBIG in general, and a safe alternative to the VSF, and whether someone has some direct experiences with any TD listed in the help page they might recommend?

Thanks all, and happy Thursday!

I recently bought a Harley Benton EX-84 EMG VW from Thomann.

I already had a separate issue regarding conflicting mahogany/nyatoh specs on the product page, which Thomann partially compensated me for (and they’ve now corrected the conflicting info).

However, after inspecting the guitar more closely, I also noticed:
several small cosmetic marks
a small chip/mark on the headstock
what appears to be a slightly uneven side fret marker / finishing issue

The guitar otherwise plays well and sounds great, although might require a setup which is ok.

In your opinion:
would you keep it?
ask for a partial refund?
or return/exchange it entirely?

Curious to hear what others would do at this price point.

I’ve recently ordered a EX84 from Thomann, but I’ve noticed that in their website the information about the wood used for the guitar is contradictory.

The first page mentioned mahogany body and neck, but other pages mention Nyatoh, then again descriptions praise the mahogany built.

I know this guitar went through a lot of cost-savings cuts such as losing the Grover tuner for a cheaper brand, and losing the original shape (although this was likely to avoid legal issues. However, changing the wood could be a major shift in the perceived quality of this guitar.

I’ve messaged Thomann last week to explain what is the guitar actually made of, asking them to avoid misleading descriptions in their website, but they haven’t responded me yet.

I have always wanted a white explorer like the one Hetfield has, and I was very happy to see that Epiphone has released this iconic model again (I know they did a run a few years ago), the 80s model, which looks stunning.

However, I am quite perplexed of the price point for their model, as I feel that £849/€1000 is honestly exaggerated for the product they’re selling, although it looks amazing.

I know inflation is a thing, but Epiphone’s previous run to a similar Explorer costed half the price, I feel they’re taking the mic…

At this point I believe I have even more reasons to consider a Harley Benton EX84 instead, and I wanted to get insights over what do people think are Epiphone’s quality/advantages over the HB, which I should be aware of, before deciding?

I can buy an HB new with gigbag for £350/70 and I can find one second hand for less than £200 (even some with the old and more traditional look, before the body changes, although not in white). This would be far less than what the Epiphone costs, and all reviews seem so positive!

Talk me in, or out of the EX84 please, I need to justify this to my partner lol

I can buy an HB new with gigbag for £370, much less if I get a B stock, and I can find one second hand for less than £200, which is far less than what the Epiphone costs.

Last month I bought my first ever automatic, the green Kamasu, and I honestly love it.

I started looking at the Bambino, and when I found out the sun and moon versions I fell instantly in love with how classy it looks.

My favourite version seems to be impossible to find in the UK (the 75th anniversary), however, there’s also this version in the first photo, which I consider amazing due to the blue hands, and other versions I found online that have the numerical dial on the left.

I’m confused as I can’t distinguish the models easily and this seems to be an issue around the Orient lineup in general.

Are these models hard to find in the UK? What’s a good price to pay for these, perhaps second hand?

Thanks
