Support for special needs individuals

Hi, I am moving to Erie soon, I have a special needs sister with severe intellectual disabilities and was passionate about improving accessibility for individuals like her in my area.

I was wondering how accessibility looks for individuals with intellectual disabilities, are there stuff for them to do? My sis is not coming with, but would love to help similarly if possible.

If anyone as any insight I would really appreciate it!

Really torn

Im really really interested and have been interested in neurosurgery, independently however, my whole life ive been interested in serving, since way before i became interested in medicine or even going to college.

Im an incoming med student and do have to start making a choice and I feel torn. I know that these two paths - nsgy and military - are not very compatible as residency spots are next to none.

Could anyone drop some wisdom/advice?

Reaching out about research

Incoming DO at erie, im interested in a competitive specialty, is it reasonable to start reaching out/getting involved in/about research or is it too much of a strain?

I see a lot of mixed things online so itd be nice to hear some up to do date info from people that live here :) Im looking into the bowie or maybe landmark sq.? I was also looking into millcreek reserve but have seen a lot of negative stuff. I will have a car and not too worried about having to drive. Im from Philly so I am used to somethings. Asking about continuing research

Incoming DO student. Ive been doing research with a surgeon in the specialty id ideally like to go into at a large academic center. I met him through my clinical job and built a good rapport with him over the years.

Is it okay to ask if I could continue doing research under him even though i wont be working there anymore and will be at a school across the state?

I cant believe it happened

Graduated highschool with a 2.2 had no idea what to do with my life. Came from a really rough home. Went to community college and then a small college, worked full time through both. Didnt do so hot but pulled through. My mental health was in the gutter, ready to give up on life.

Today i got pulled from the waitlist at the only school i got interviewed!

Im gonnaa be a doctor 🥲

Can you join the military while in medical school?

Pretty much title, like after your first year? Or can you do like residency through the military?

On AL. Got an email asking about prereqs

I got an email asking if im still interested and if i could get done/verify completion of some prereqs. When i said i had done them they asked for the syllabus for one of them i guess to verify.

What could this possibly mean?

I got a text and an email asking if im still interested. Is this a good sign?

Got a text asking if i was still interested and simultaneously an email. The email was asking if i was still interested and asked if i was willing and able finish some prereqs even though they are already done.

Is this a good sign? I did get the other deposit emails as well

To new premeds - dont be afraid to cold email or advocate for yourself!

Just really wanted to put this out there. You miss 100% of the shots you dont take.

I am a first gen, no connections from family or anything. I knew the only way to get anything was to advocate for myself. I cold emailed a ton of the surgeons at the hospital i work with. Stayed late after work to shadow or talk. Emailed asking if there was any way i could do research with them or shadow.

This led to a research internship at a really cool lab at a very prestigious institution. I have 3 high impact publications in surgical sub-specialties, and now a rec letter from a very very high regarded surgeon.

I put in a lot of work and hours for the research, getting things done ahead of schedule, like i said stayed late after work, asked questions.

Reach out, prove yourself, and advocate for yourself! It can really help!

Do I have a shot for any DO schools?

Currently on WL at one school, I hope i get in but i didnt apply very broadly last cycle. Do i have a shot with the following stats?

u/sGPA: both 3.05
Masters gpa (currently still in the program): roughly 3.3/3.4 :(
MCAT: 503, retake scheduled for august
Clinical paid: 7000 hours
Research: i think around 700ish - 3 mid author pubs, 1 second author
Volunteering: around 200ish mix of clinical and non-clinical
Paid non clinical: around 600hours
My story: worked pretty much full time all through undergrad and my masters, also needed to take care of my special needs sister in the beginning years of college

Does the WL/AL actually move or is it like fake?

Maybe im just tweaking out from waiting so much but this is the only school ive heard from and on the AL and its already almost june. Im assuming that theyre done accepting? I got both emails but from what im seeing theres still no movement. Should i just withdraw and reapply for next year?
