New Jersey Hardcore In The 1990s Taped On VHS - About To Bust!

During the 1990s, I taped a bunch of hardcore, punk and alt bands in New Jersey on VHS, along with my friends and I goofin' around, going to parties, going to shows and driving around aimlessly. Recently I edited all the tapes, cut them down into a 2 hour supercut of the 'greatest clips' and stitched it together into this film called ABOUT TO BUST!

The bands are: Vision, Floorpunch, Ignite, Sefler, Fastbreak, Hands Tied, Clubber Lang, Get High, Bad Luck 13, Rain On The Parade, Last Straw, Submission, Slide and Mustard.

This footage captures what it was like in central New Jersey during the 1990s for my friends and I. We were into wasting time, going to hardcore shows, hanging out at Denny's, driving around aimlessly and partying, not necessarily in that order. There was no nightlife, so we had to make our own.

Hope you dig it, Cheers

R.E.M. pairs well with several wines and cheeses and is best served chilled, on VHS.

Van Halen on VHS!

Here's my Van Halen collection on VHS. Always looking out for bootleg tapes that cover those early years with Roth, these two are pretty good. Both have European TV appearances, talk show clips and promo videos. The gem of my collection is Van Halen In Concert, which is the shortened, broadcast version of Live Without A Net that was shown on HBO and MTV in 1986, released before Live Without A Net came out on Laserdisc, Beta and VHS and has slightly different titles and chyrons. Sadly, I don't think we are going to see a Volume 2 of the Video Hits series.

Anybody have any bootleg tapes from the Roth years or concerts on VHS?

Motörhead on VHS gallery AKA Lemmy Is God

Here is a selection of fine Motörhead videotapes and concert films on VHS that I have collected. Live In Toronto is an incredible show, highly recommended, great setlist and the band is amped up and ready to kill. On the other hand, Deaf Not Blind is kind of weird because it is a lip-synched performance on a sound stage. Still fun to watch though. Everything Louder Than Everything Else is outstanding mini-documentary and concert footage from one of my favorite eras of the band, their 1916 LP and tour. The Birthday Party is a fun video with on the bus interviews with the boys plus concert footage. Another Fine Day is a Sony Video EP with 6 music videos. The only problem I have is that I wish there was more Motörhead on film, crossing my fingers that one day we'll get a full length documentary film.

Heavy Metal Parking Lot was taped 40 years ago today!

4 score and 40 joints ago today, our forefathers John Heyn & Jeff Krulik taped Heavy Metal Parking Lot at the Capitol Centre in Landover, MD on a borrowed VHS camcorder. It is still the greatest underground documentary ever made, unrivaled in its depiction of American culture in 1986.

Let us commemorate this joyous occasion in history! Please feel free to eulogize your favorite one liner from the movie below or talk about your favorite character! Hell yeah! Drink a couple beers, party. Hells yeah.

What’s up analog freaks! My new book series Rock Bands On VHS catalogs and reviews over 1,275 home videos on VHS, Beta and LaserDisc that were released during the age of video, roughly 1975-2000. Written for the record collector, genre completist or armchair archivist, included here are hundreds of detailed evaluations of each rock film, along with full color artwork, track listings and release information for each tape. Inside, you will discover which films are indispensable and which films to avoid. Learn about the modern classics, unearth forgotten, out-of-print films and find out about videos that have slipped through the cracks since the VCR has gone extinct.

Rock Bands On VHS Pt. II: Heavy Metal goes balls deep into heavy metal compilations and video magazines, with a detailed chronology of popular metal series like Metal Head, Hard N’ Heavy, Video Sheet Metal, Turn Up The Volume as well as underground VHS tape series like Tales From The Pit and Decaying Visions. After that, we do a deep dive into the 1990s subscription-only service Rock Video Monthly, going over each tape issued from 1992 until 1995 in their heavy metal series.

Rock Bands On VHS Pt. III: Alternative & Punk goes triple dog deep into punk and hardcore video fanzines like Flipside Video Fanzine, Target Video, MUV Underground and more. In addition to that, we do a deep dive into some of the most important underground VHS tapers of the 1980s and 1990s and bedroom VHS labels such as Videophile, Para Punx, Psycho TV and Peter DiMattia tapes. After that, we breeze through 118 alternative, punk and hardcore compilation tapes. Finally, at the end, we get into the nitty gritty of 1990s subscription-only service Rock Video Monthly, going over each tape issued from 1992 until 1995 in their alternative series.

My Rock Bands On VHS series is available now ONLY on Amazon as an ebook or as a gorgeous 8x10 softcover paperback. I researched, wrote, edited and published this thing myself; it is a labor of love. I’ve been a VHS collector and have been obsessed with music videos since 1984. I have thousands of tapes from many different genres; ran out of room on my shelves years ago. I’m 50 years old but I still collect, still hit the thrift stores, still love finding new gems.

I also wrote another book about VHS which I published last year, VCRs & Guitars, which is a deep dive into the world of rock films, rock TV and cult movies from 1975-2005. That book explores how VHS and video technology emerged, how rock bands used home video to dominate social structures and has chapters on VHS tape trading, VHS bootlegs along with essays about VHS production and duplication.

Anyway, thanks for reading my promotional spiel! If anybody has any questions about punk, heavy metal or rock bands on VHS (or LaserDisc and Beta) feel free to ask and I’ll do my best to answer below. I’ll also answer any questions about collecting, archiving, researching OR writing books about VHS too! Cheers ~ AJ
