Leila Cruz joins her DLSU ates at PLDT

Leila Cruz joins her DLSU ates at PLDT

This one caught us by surprise since there was no indication that she was moving.

Hopefully this move benefits both parties where Leila develops her offense further while PLDT gains a backup for KKD on the Opposite side.

On hindsight how would you describe Leila’s career at Capital1?

Galeries get first win in the On Tour conference

Congratulations to the Tower Highrisers!

Is Erika Deloria the biggest steal in the 2025 draft? Girl has the potential to become a superstar in the PVL. Chery’s demise has been good for her career so far.

The Kids Are Alright

Good showing from the new generation of Creamline players. Hopefully they stay together and develop that Creamline chemistry.

Particularly impressed this game with Paralejas, Lalongisip, Jamili, and Bernardo. Celis, Toring, Gamit, and Pangilinan get extended minutes as middles for this game. They need to develop their net defense more as they were outblocked by NXLED.

Where are the bigshot defense lawyers of VP Sara?

VP Sara is defended by Fortun Narvasa & Salazar. I was surprised that their grizzled veterans such as Atty. Sigfrid Fortun has not appeared yet. I am sure that the young defense lawyers are competent, I just wonder where the senior partners are in this case?

Jaja “Sachi Minowa” Santiago joining Rebisco?

I saw this on Facebook (credit to Alicia Firmeza). Is Sachi Minowa really joining Creamline or Choco Mucho?

Iphone 17 Pro Build Quality is Not Great

Today while I was wiping down my five-month old iPhone 17 Pro I noticed that it has a deep dent and scratch. I have been using XUNDD clear case. I could not even remember if the phone fell recently. Very disappointing that Apple used a brittle aluminium body. Meanwhile, my old iphones (11 and 14Pro) are still basically spotless.

I also noticed that there is now a gap between the screen and the aluminum body. Does this mean that the water resistance is now compromised?

PLDT gives undrafted Xyza Gula, Joan Monares another look

It has become a strategy of some teams not to draft players but hope for free agency after the draft where they will not have to pay the rookie minimum salary. We saw this last year with Cignal tapping NU libero Pearl Denura after the draft. Another player who was picked as free agent after the draft was Ayesha Juegos (AdU, now CMFT). Maybe some teams are also feeling the pinch of having top heavy salaries.

Do you think that is it time for PVL to implement a salary cap for teams to level the playing field or should teams be left to decide if they want to go all-in in getting quality players at premium prices?

Ranking the 2025 PVL Draftees

It has almost been a year and after four conferences, On Tour 2025, Invitational 2025, Reinforced 2025, AFC 2026, we can now get a barometer of the performance of the second PVL draft class. Again, I have skipped rookies who rarely played as we definitely cannot reliably gauge their performance yet.

------------------

NOTE: This is already the third version of this post. The first, long version was scrapped by Reddit for some unknown reason when I tried to edit it with my mobile phone. This is the second time that entire bodies of my post magically disappeared. Lesson learned. For long posts I will write it on another format first before copy-pasting it on reddit. Now I will have to rewrite again what took me hours at first. I will try to post a concise version instead.

-------------------

  1. Bella Belen #1 Cap1 - During 2025 Reinforced, finished as #3 best local scorer behind Savi Davison and Brooke Van Sickle. Capital1's #2 scoring option behind import Oleksandra Bytsenko. 2026 AFC Best OH, Rookie of the Conference, 2025-2026 Best OH, Rookie of the Year, even won 2026 All-Star MVP. #1 best scorer by far during 2026 AFC and was top 10 in nearly all stat departments. Would have won AFC MVP if not for the rule that only players from semifinalist teams win the award.
  2. Riza Nogales #25 Zus - 2025 Invitational Best MB, 2026 AFC Best MB. Zus took a leap of faith by taking her during the 3rd round. They did not need another MB since they already have Thea Gagate, Sharya Ancheta (2024 Reinforced Rookie of the Conference), and taking Alexis Miner in the 1st round. The gamble paid off since Riza has already won two best MBs and the young Zus squad made their first ever finals appearance during 2025 Reinforced.
  3. AC Miner #5 Zus - 2025 Reinforced Rookie of the Conference. Able to score double digits with her quickness and explosiveness in attacking. Sadly sidelined during 2026 AFC due to injury.

Honorable mentions:

  1. Jules Tolentino #11 PGA (now NXLED) - Credit to the Van Sickles for trusting a rookie setter with a forgettable UAAP career to spearhead their 2025 Reinforced Conference championship offense. This gave her added morale boost and value if ever she decides to take her talent elsewhere given that NXLED recently acquired Gel Cayuna.
  2. Erika Deloria #20 Chery (now Galeries) - Unknown, unheralded, and unexpected but certainly not untalented. Probably picked by Chery due to fitting then head coach Kungfu's formula of UST OHs - high-flying and powerful. The demise of Chery and her eventual transfer to Galeries was a boon to her career as she was a revelation in the 2026 AFC, where she became Galeries's #1 offensive option.
  3. Jean Asis #2 Galeries - Just like AC Miner, known to score double-digits with her explosiveness and quickness. Certainly, she will be winning Best MBs in the future.
  4. Lyann de Guzman #4 NXLED - During the 2025 On Tour tournament, she averaged 3.93 points per set, to go with 29.75%Atk 25.61% Dig 38.46% Rec in efficiency. Sadly, she lost her starting spot come 2025 Reinforced with NXLED going with Paola Martinez and Chiara Permentilla as starting OHs, and 2026 AFC with the incoming PGA champion OH core of BVS, Myla Pablo, and Jonah Sabete.

I feel that the 2025 draft really had no busts as the other first round picks aside from Bella, Jean, AC, LDG, and Jules, really had no significant playing time. However, I must say that with her US NCAA and international experince, CMFT must really test Tia Andaya's mettle. She had one significant game during the AFC where she contributed quality minutes not as a setter but as an Opposite Spiker instead. With her height and jump, she might have a potential as an attacking setter ala Julia Coronel, Ivy Perez, or Jasmine Nabor. She is being wasted riding the bench.

ADDENDUM: I did not consider Alohi Robins-Hardy since, while she is technically and by PVL definition a rookie, she has already competed in semi-pro and professional leagues here and abroad.

How about you? Who are your Top 3 from last year’s draft in terms of performance or impact to their team? Who are your honorable mentions? Do you have what you consider as draft busts who were drafted high but underperformed?

Capital1 acquires Gandler and Santos

Cap1 Solar Spikers have acquired the talents of Vanie Gandler and Erika Santos. This will make Capital1 a contender in the coming seasons. Do you think so too?
