Moving from outpatients to ward nursing

Hello!

As the title states I am hoping to move from outpatients to ward nursing at some point in the next year as I need a change and to expand on my skills. I got into outpatients as an NQN and feel like I've lost quite a lot of basic skills. However I do feel like I have gained a very niche knowledge and skillset for the area I work in currently which would definitely be an advantage on a ward.

Anyone else been in OP for years and decided to move to ward nursing? I'm kinda pooping my pants a little as they will expect me to know more than I know as I'm 4+ years qualified. I had an interview at the start of my pregnancy for a ward role and the whole time this little voice in my head kept telling me I wasn't a real nurse. Silly, as I see my OP nurse colleagues as highly skilled! They said I interviewed well, but they asked me about certain drugs during the interview and I don't deal with medication on the daily. So I stumbled and made it very obvious I hadn't a clue.

I have applied for a job recently and wonder how to have the advantage if I am successful for interview? Like.. many of my niche skills won't help me on a ward. I suppose I have loads of wound care experience and I can take bloods. So will preach on that.

OP was a choice as I adored the speciality, still do. But Im currently on maternity leave and I feel two shifts a week on a ward would be more accommodating than 3/4 in a clinic. Also to progress anywhere I want to experience ward nursing to at least have checked it off! Especially if I want to try ITU one day or Neonatal nursing.

Thanks in advance 😁

Is this an error?

Hello
Just need to confirm I am not just suffering from fatigue and mum brain here before I swing by the pharmacy later this morning.

So my 6 month old was prescribed amoxicillin 125mg for a UTI 5mls, 3x a day for 7 days. Picked up from pharmacy on Saturday lunchtime, so she had her first two doses on Saturday, then went to three doses from Sunday.

When pharmacy gave me the bottle (States 100mls on the label) they told me there would be excess medication and to only complete the prescribed amount and not to complete the bottle.. and to just use a teaspoon to give her each dose.

I overhead the person who was making up the medication ask her colleague how to do so, and the main pharmacist told her to reconstitute with 84mls of water.. which it says so on the side of the box. So I trusted that.

I have been measuring the 5mls with a syringe so that she gets an accurate dose. Today after her morning dose (that would be 5 full days of course) I thought the bottle felt pretty empty, so I emptied it and measured out what was left in there. 17mls. So essentially 3 doses. But that will just take us to 6 days.

I then realised that she probably should have been given two bottles as 5mls, 3x a day for 7 days comes to 105mls - but missing one dose isn't my main concern.

I'm concerned with the fact the bottle has been made up inaccurately?, so each 5mls contains a higher strength of medication. She has had 75mls over 5 days. And with the 17mls left that's only 92mls of medicine in the bottle?

Am I correct or does this not really matter?? Please someone help me understand as I am so tired 🙃 also I wouldn't give a care if this medication was for me, but because my baby is only 6 months I am more concerned about her poor little kidneys trying to process this.

Thanks in advance for helping my sleepy brain work this one out 🥲

Bloom Fresco inserts

Hello

I was given an older bloom Fresco feeding chair by a colleague, and it's in a bit of a state, however the new inserts are more expensive than just buying a whole other high chair 😂

Is there any where that makes compatible inserts? But not

New Grandparents are weird, right?

I'm a first time mum to a beautiful baby (now 5m/o). Now I have a very good relationship with my mum, and I get on with my dad most of the time. But I've noticed that since my parents have become grandparents, they seem to be acting strange. For example, my partner and I send photos of baby to each set of grandparents multiple times a week. Last time I went to visit my parents (who only live 25mins away) I noticed that they had printed out, framed and hung up many MANY photos of our girl, ones we took and sent but they edited them to BW and essentially their house is now a shrine of the first few months of baby girls life. Which is cute cause they adore her, but also those are our memories.. they have plenty photos of their own they could have used. ALSO they printed out the first photo we got with baby girl in theatre (c section baby!) in both colour and BW and framed both! It's funny. But also it makes me feel weird.

I am an only child, and fiercely independent. Always have been. Ive asked my mum for support postpartum only a few times when I've physically been exhausted, as I always feel like sometimes its just easier to get on and do things myself (and with partner when he isn't at uni/working) rather than have to them explain what needs done and how to do something as that's more brain power for when I'm exhausted. I've been told I'm not asking for their support enough. But also, I feel like any time they've come to support I'm more mentally drained than without! As they end up playing with baby and then when it's time for her nap they say they will help with housework but I have to then decline as that will cause noise and wake baby.

Whenever my dad is around baby he is obsessed! He says her name constantly at her and is very up in her face trying to get a reaction from her. Also that weird thing where other people pretend to eat your baby, where they fake chomp on their cheeks or feet. Shouldn't that be reserved for the parents only?! It's at the point I dread seeing him as it makes me wince.

Mums also said a few times (by accident) when she picks up the baby 'come to mum'. Which I know is so harmless but, does she feel like an extended parent of baby?

Mum had postnatal depression when she had me, and she had said before I had baby that she hoped I would not experience it like she did. Now I absolutely have some sort of postnatal anxiety around baby being with others, being held by others, intrusive thoughts etc (don't worry, I went straight to gp and have been referred to psychology), but I know it's not PND as I feel fine most of the time! But I think my mum is convinced I have PND as I cried to her once about how stressed I felt due to lack of sleep. Which is another issue. She messages me every morning to ask how babies sleep was.. which does not help any anxiety as I then have to explain how poor the sleep was every morning, where I just want to get on with it. But it's every morning and I'm now at the point I am waiting for the message to come through.

I don't know what the point in this post really was to begin with, as I'm not asking for advice. More venting! I just want to know if other people find this after they have their first that parents become very weird?

Charity shops with homeware in Aberdeen/Shire

Looking for recommendations for charity shops that have good second hand homeware in the north east. I really miss the old Somebody Cares at Hazelhead and the treasure that could be found in there! I do like BHF too, but it doesn't scratch the itch as I like to rake around!

Is there anywhere else locally that is good?

Thanks in advance 😁

Base for 4x3m log cabin

Hello 🤗

We are planning on putting a log cabin in our garden (N.E Scotland). The garden was a mess when we first moved in four years ago, and with time and a lot of saving we have made a lot of improvements so far (knocked down a partially built garage and installed a fence along the back to secure the garden).

My query is regarding a suitable base for a cabin of this size. Currently the ground is uneven hardcore (image below). I've been quoted for a concrete pour from a local company, however it's just not within our budget. Is there a more cost effective alternative solution? Or something we can DIY to save the cost of getting someone in?

Thanks in advance ☺️
