Want to get better at public speaking?

Rajasi, a UIUC-area student and non-native English speaker, joined McKinley Toastmasters and found a supportive place to practice, get feedback, and build confidence.

If public speaking, presentations, or networking aren't your strong suit, this might be worth checking out.

PSA for incoming students public speaking club right off campus

Hey all welcoming the incoming class! One thing that isn't on the typical "clubs to join" list but honestly should be: there's a Toastmasters club (McKinley #467) that meets right at the Champaign Public Library, super close to campus.

If you've ever frozen up giving a presentation, gotten nervous in an interview, or just want to get more comfortable speaking off the cuff, it's a solid low-key way to practice regular people, no professor, no grade, just practice and feedback in a room that's actually rooting for you.

Visiting as a guest is completely free, no commitment, no signup in advance just show up. If you like it and want to join as a member, there's a reasonable membership fee (goes toward materials and the org itself, not some club cash grab), but there's zero pressure to join after visiting.

Meets the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, 6:30–8pm.

Info: mckinley.toastmastersclubs.org

Not affiliated with the university, just a community group that could give you real world experience with professionals.

How would you find a local public speaking group?

Hey kinda random, but how do people usually find local clubs or groups around Champaign? I’m part of a small public speaking group and we’re trying to get the word out without it feeling like an ad. Curious what actually works or what you’d pay attention to.
