I need advice on how to proceed going forward
Hello everyone, I’m currently doing a master’s in biomedical engineering at a relatively highly ranked university in the Middle East. I have an undergraduate degree in chemistry, and I’m now working toward my master’s.
I haven’t fully started working on my thesis yet, but my research will involve creating a drug-delivery device for the brain, mainly for the treatment of epilepsy.
More importantly, my main concern is job prospects after graduation. I understand that people who comment on Reddit tend to be more negative, mostly because many people come here to rant or share their worries and that had me overthinking . Still, I would really appreciate some realistic advice.
Ideally, I want to start working after I graduate. However, there really aren’t many opportunities in the country I’m currently in, so I’m most likely going to have to move abroad. As a worst-case scenario, I’m considering pursuing a PhD in another country so that I could potentially continue working there afterward if I don’t manage to land a job after graduating with my master’s.
I’m also currently trying to find an internship so I can gain some experience outside of university research. The problem is that I’m not really sure how to find something directly related to biomedical engineering in my country, since the opportunities seem quite limited. I’m considering looking for an internship in a hospital, even if it’s more on the clinical or medical-device side, just to get some relevant exposure. At the moment, most of my experience is research-based and comes from work I’ve done at university.
I would really appreciate any advice you can give me. What should I focus on during my master’s to improve my job prospects? What kinds of internships or experience would be most valuable? Which countries might be best to apply to? And where do you usually look for biomedical engineering-related jobs?
I know biomedical engineering is a very broad field, so I’m also not sure what specific job titles I should be searching for. I haven’t done much research into the job market yet, but I genuinely enjoy what I’m doing. I’m just worried about my future and want to make sure I’m preparing myself properly.
Thank you!
