Buying Pollinators (Bumble Bee Box)

I have seen a few places selling boxes of bumble bees that you place in your garden.

Is this one of those things that sounds good but is actually a horrible idea? E.g. introduces diseases to local populations, etc... OR is it a good way to boost local numbers of insects.

If it is beneficial, does anyone know of good sources for invertibrates? What are the best to get?

Irratic HR readings H10

Recently my H10 has been showing erratic readings. The firmware is upto date and it has recently had a battery change. The issue occured both before and after the battery change. It is paired to my Polar Pacer.

The unit is approx 2 years old and is used for running twice a week.

What happens is this - Running:

Warm up ~ 15 minutes - HR seems to be reported correctly.
Hard Running ~ 12 minutes - Heart rate seems okay - although one time thought my HR was 220.

Cool down ~ 15 minutes - sometimes HR seems accurate other times it has reported my HR is 60-70bpm. This is ridiculous since My HR is still elevated from the hard running.

This has occured a few times in recent weeks and is making my data useless.

So either my heart is about to give way, or the H10/Watch/Connection/Software has something wrong.

Has anyone found this/resolved it?

Insect Hibernation and Cutting Wildflower Meadows - Seeking Advice

We have a wildflower meadow and are conflicted as to when we should cut it.

I was considering early March - to allow insects to hibernate in the long grass/plants over winter and allow birds to forage the seed heads.

As an alternative I was considering cutting in autumn carefully and then standing the cutting upright in pots so that any insects hibernating within the plant matter can stay there.

What do you good people suggest/recommend?

Keeping safe working with wildlife

Hello,

I'm considering working with a wildlife resuce charity in the UK. I have quite bad contamination OCD.

How can I keep safe while helping clean out enclosures of animals? Recommended PPE, etc...

I'd love to help, but also I'm very worried about catching diseases.

Any/all advice welcome.

Suitable bird boxes to install on the house

We are getting our guttering and fascia replaced soon. I thought this is a good opportunity to install some suitable wall mounted boxes for birds.

My house is semi-detatched 2 story north-west England, the front of the house faces north, with the side east and rear south.

What bird boxes/nests are suitable to install on these walls? It seems swift/swallow would be good for the side of the house, but if I can provide any other boxes/nests else where I'd love to know.

Minimum useful hedge size for birds

I'm looking to install a hedge in my front garden, probably beech, maybe holly.

What kind of depth/height is minimum for nesting birds?

The hedge will be a T shape between my neighbours and I 6x7 meters.
