I think I’m beefing with the dean (not really)

Okay, I need to know if I’m being dramatic because I feel like I have developed a personal beef with my dean… 😭

For context, I’m an incoming 1L and I’m genuinely excited to start. I also want to make it very clear that I don’t think I’m entitled to a scholarship or special treatment. I completely understand that scholarship money is limited and that admissions deans are busy!!!

BUT.

At admitted students day, I had a conversation with the dean about scholarships. She told me that I was more than likely going to receive a larger scholarship and specifically told me to reach back out after a certain date. She even gave me her personal phone number and told me to contact her.

So I did exactly that. The next day after the date she gave me, I called, left a very polite voicemail, and waited. Nothing.

About two weeks later, I called again. Still nothing.

Then I started noticing people in my incoming class talking about receiving emails & texts from the dean reminding them to complete their assessments. I had not completed mine either, yet I never received one. Again, I didn’t think too much of it because I figured there could be a perfectly reasonable explanation.

Fast-forward about two months, I decide to try one more time. I emailed her through the original email she had sent me and politely asked whether there happened to be any unused scholarship funds available. I basically said that if there were, I would be grateful to be considered.

A few hours later, she responded

“Our class is full and our scholarship bank is exhausted. See you in a few days!”

I have absolutely no issue with that answer. If the scholarship money is gone, it’s gone. I wasn’t expecting her to magically find money for me. What I do find frustrating is that I was specifically told to follow up, given her personal number, followed up multiple times, and never heard back.

Maybe I’m being sensitive, but it’s hard not to feel a little 🤨 about the whole thing.

Please tell me if I’m being unreasonable because I genuinely want to know!!! still grateful but it definitely left a bad taste in my mouth

Advice!

hi all! I’m an incoming 1L to a T70 school, I got a really good scholarship (applied in March so not full tuition, unfortunately) but I’m taking about a $20k loan out this year.

I went to an ivy for undergrad, and I have this terrible sense of dread of starting at a state school, I would be content with graduating from said school, but I can’t help but feel that I owe myself more.

im interested in attempting to transfer, but I’m afraid that this would alert my current school & if it results that I have to pay an extraordinary amount or whatnot for the schools I’m interested in transferring to, I’d rather stick to the state school.

I’m interested in transferring to Michigan or Northwestern. Will my school know I’m attempting to transfer, does it leave a bad taste in their mouth? Can I undo the transfer? does anyone have any input?

thank you!

Law school debt

I'm a rising 1L and am about to take out around $20k in loans for my first year of law school. I was fortunate enough to have a full-ride scholarship for undergrad, so I've never had to take out student loans or pay tuition out of pocket.

I'll be attending a T100 law school that gave me a generous, unconditional scholarship. After my scholarship, I'll owe roughly $8k in tuition for the year. Housing and meal costs will be about $10k (ill be living in the dorms), hence the $20k I’ll be taking out.

I'm interested in PI and have a job lined up after graduation as an associate at the law firm where I currently work as a paralegal. Even knowing that, I'm honestly anxious. I've never had a car loan (grad gift), never had student loans, and I've been lucky enough to live with my parents (I'm 23). The idea of owing that much money is intimidating.

I also have about $10k in savings, but I'd really prefer not to touch it since it's my emergency fund.

For those who've been through law school, does this seem like a reasonable amount to borrow for one year? Is there anything you wish you had known before taking out loans? Sometimes I worry that I'm making a bad financial decision by borrowing this much for a school outside the T14/T50, even though the scholarship made it my most affordable option.

I'd really appreciate any advice or perspective. worthy to note that I expect to take out less for the next 2 years, because I applied in Feb and wasn’t accepted until April, I didn’t have a large window to apply for external scholarships

does anyone have any recommendations for the pain for my bottom row? Tylenol is not helping lol

In, arguably, the toughest law admissions cycle to date, big congratulations to you if you got into law school this cycle!

Stats that could’ve gotten you into any T14 2 years ago (and probably in 2 years) that didn’t even stand a chance this year, and you still got in!

Getting into any law school this year is huge and I hope you all take the time to celebrate your accomplishments!

goodbye lawschooladmissions, it was hell!

Incoming 1L at the law school, new to EL, what are your apartment complex recommendations? something ideally furnished but doesn’t have to be super fancy at all, only planning on spending 3/4 nights a week max.

would ideally like to spend under 1k, 1.2k max— is this feasible in EL?

thanks! :)
