Private Computer Science Mentor, Adv. Middle School Student, West Seattle in-person, 1–2 hours/week
Hello West Seattle! We are looking for a strong computer scientist or software engineer to mentor our 12½-year-old son.
He is about two years advanced in math & reading and new to programming. We are not looking for a standard coding tutor.
The goal is to build a real foundation in computer science and systems thinking, with programming used as a tool.
Learning goals:
Algorithms and data structures
Logic, abstraction and computational thinking
Computer architecture: CPU, memory, storage
Operating systems and networks
Databases and information representation
Software/system architecture
Efficiency, complexity and tradeoffs
Teaching approach
Sessions should mix explanation, whiteboarding, discussion, small experiments and hands-on programming.
We want someone who can teach why, not just how, build concepts progressively, and follow the student’s curiosity. Student is very curious and shows good raw instincts around architecture.
The student
He is bright, social and athletic — gets great reviews from his coaches as a very hard worker and team leader. This is fun enrichment, not remediation, or a way to connect an isolated child to learning. Student is in fact, a bit of a jock.
We want someone who can connect, challenge him, and make the subject genuinely exciting.
Ideal background
You might be:
A strong CS undergraduate or graduate student
A software engineer with excellent CS fundamentals
A CS researcher, professor or educator
Depth in systems, algorithms or architecture is especially valuable.
