PSA for anyone thinking of renting at Webster Apartments (4228 SW Dawson St)

I’m posting this as a PSA for anyone apartment hunting in West Seattle and considering The Webster on SW Dawson & California Ave.

I lived in this building for two years, and for the first 14 months, my experience was mostly great. I lived in a first-floor unit and had some minor moisture/mold around the windows, but nothing I considered outside the realm of “old building in Seattle.” When a two-bedroom opened up on the top floor, management was extremely helpful in transferring my lease, and Samuel, the maintenance technician, was always genuinely kind, helpful, and quick to respond.

Then I moved upstairs.

I moved into the two-bedroom in September. After a few months, once it got consistently cold, mold started growing around the windows. I cleaned it. It came back. I cleaned it again. It came back. Significantly worse than anything I’d experienced in my previous unit.

I reported it repeatedly. Management eventually acknowledged to me in writing that:

“Moisture is a known condition in this building due to its concrete construction.” I was told to keep my windows open at all times—even during the winter—run a dehumidifier, keep furniture and belongings away from the walls, and manage bathroom moisture.

The problem? I was already doing all of those things. I told them that repeatedly. The mold continued to grow.

So I spent the winter trying to heat an apartment while simultaneously leaving the windows open and running dehumidifiers 24/7. Unsurprisingly, my electricity costs skyrocketed.

For five months, I was repeatedly told they were “looking into long-term solutions.” After asking around and speaking with former tenants, I was told that moisture and mold issues in the building apparently go back to the early 2000s. I also found multiple publicly available SDCI complaints related to similar issues in the building. So I’m genuinely curious how many decades are required to “look into” a long-term solution.

After five months, the solution I was finally offered was... A new bathroom fan. 😑 The bathroom was literally the one room in my apartment where I did not have a mold or moisture problem.

There is also visible pooling water/apparent drainage issues on the roof, particularly on the same side of the building where the mold in my unit was worst.

Eventually, I chose to end my lease early rather than continue living in those conditions with my animals.

Also, once I started asking more directly what was actually going to be done about the ongoing mold—and whether I would be compensated for belongings that had been ruined—the responses stopped. 5+ emails. Unanswered.

I genuinely loved living in this building before this happened, and I still have nothing negative to say about Samuel. But a known building moisture problem should not become the tenant’s responsibility to manage by leaving windows open all winter, running dehumidifiers around the clock, paying dramatically higher electric bills, repeatedly cleaning recurring mold, and replacing damaged belongings—only to be ignored once they start asking for an actual solution.

If you’re considering renting here, I strongly recommend checking the SDCI complaint history and asking very specific questions about the building’s moisture history before signing a lease.

I have added photos of the mold and the email acknowledging that moisture is a “known condition” in the building.

Why are we so pressed about the fireworks?

hey so recently moved here and wondering why is everyone so pressed about fireworks it’s the 4th of July, I swear Seattle have The most snooty ppl. like I get it work etc but Friday-Sunday on July 4th weekend why are we complaining. For those that read this take a break and enjoy life, just for this weekend.

edit: I love the replies, but for pet owners if you know the holiday is coming every year and you know nothing going to change, why do the same thing? … I do have a pet, before we get into it, he’s just chill about it but I do understand the worry for your pets just why not plan Instead of complain?

Help needed: injured bird at Lincoln Park

Hi everyone!

I was walking in Lincoln park today and came across a black crow with a broken leg. It was able to fly about two feet but there was visibly something wrong with one of their legs, and it struggled to really get off the ground.

I reached out to the PAWS Wildlife rehabilitation center (https://www.paws.org/wildlife/) and they informed me the only way the crow can get help is if someone is able to capture & bring the crow to the center. I am unfortunately unable to do so myself but wanted to post here in case anyone has the materials or ability to transport the bird to the center. The people from PAWS encouraged me to post on reddit to see if there is another good samaritan who is willing & able to help.

The bird is located just west of softball field #3. It was last seen perched on the ground near the trail (shown in the photo, the bird is circled in red).

Thank you so much if you're able to help! Happy to respond to any further questions.

How late do people set this shit off?

In highland park, my dog is going to go insane. I am going to go insane. How much money are these freaks lighting on fire? Fuck. This is my first Fourth of July in this neighborhood. Does it ever actually stop or I should just plan to sleep tomorrow?

Which parts of West Seattle have the least fireworks?

We‘re over near Roxbury and I can’t handle the fireworks. I have no idea how people aren’t rioting over how much of a war zone the neighborhood becomes.

I deeply love West Seattle, but the fireworks make me want to move far away. Where in West Seattle gets the least amount of fireworks?

Menu of new taco truck in Fauntleroy, La Casa Del Sabor. Open today, 7/4

I did not try it, have no affiliation, and no further information. And no, I don't know what some of those words are supposed to be. But the menu isn't available online so I'm posting it here.

Large dead raccoon White Center

There’s a very large dead raccoon on 26th Ave., Southwest at 108th, it’s too big for me to put in my compost bin, greater than 15 pounds. I’ve tried calling King County(RASK)but there’s no option for dead animal pick up. Any ideas on what to do with it?
(Without touching it)
It would be too bad for it to sit all weekend and bloat up).

Today's Trash (Morgan Junction)

So far in 2026 I've picked roughly 25 cubic feet of litter off our streets, sidewalks, parks, beaches, etc. I've been at it since 2018 and am so grateful for the chance to care for a place I love and to, hopefully, do good.

For the most part, litter in West Seattle (outside of parks) is easily sorted into three equal piles: cigarette butts, food/drink wrappers (with most of that being Starby's, McD's, or booze-related), and everything else. Maybe not in terms of weight or volume, but in simple quantity of items.

Best place in West Seattle to see fireworks tonight?

We would prefer to not go to Lake Union again for the Fourth of July evening celebration, are there alternatives from West Seattle?

Did anyone see the dog run away from the Starbucks at Morgan junction around 8:55? Did the owner get the dog back?

This morning at the Morgan Junction intersection, a dog got spooked and ran across the intersection. It looked like it might have been tied to a chair because it dragged the chair into the street before it eventually got free and it bolted up Fauntleroy.

I wish I could have helped, I was in the car with my baby when I saw it happen.

Does anyone know if the dog and its owner were reunited? ☹️ I thought I saw what looked like the owner leave the Starbucks and ask which way the dog went. I’ve been thinking about the poor pup all morning!

Alki to Downtown Public Transit Commute

My partner and I just found an apartment right on the water at Alki, but I work downtown by the market and I don’t have a car. I’ve seen a lot of posts about to the commute via bus from West Seattle, but not too much about the water taxi, especially recent. Is the commute worth it? I’ve been in Seattle less than a year and this feels like it could be a big change (we live in Cap Hill right now), but love the vibes in West Seattle/Alki so far!

Found dog Arbor Heights

Does anyone recognize this gentleman?

A kind person saw him in the middle of the street near Marine view Drive and 106th St. She was not from the neighborhood so I offered to take him in until we find his people. Very friendly and I’m giving him shade and water. Assuming he’s from Arbor Heights.

Speed bumps needed on Alaska Ave

I'm at my wits end. I live on Alaska Ave west of California Ave and the speeding is out of control. Cars and landscaping crews with heavy equipment bombing down the hill at 60 mph every single f*cking day. It is out of control. I watched a young child nearly get hit yesterday leaving the park. We need speed bumps badly!

Has anyone else had a card mishap at a bake sale fundraiser recently?

I bought some cookies from a bake sale outside PCC yesterday. Two teenagers were raising money for Rise Up Youth. Tapped my card for what I thought was a $20 purchase, but later saw that my credit card shows a $250 charge.

I’ve reached out to the group directly and will dispute the charge on my credit card if I don’t hear back. I’m hoping it was just a typo on the card reader! Just curious if anyone else has run into something similar, either with this group or bake sales in general. Will update if I hear back!
