Going into my second year with no research and freaking out

Hi everyone,

As per my post title, I am going into my second year with nothing and I have no idea what I'm doing. I need advice.

I'm a PhD student going into my second year of a geology program with absolutely no research and a pi so hands off he might as well be on sabbatical.

Every research proposal I've sent has been shot down with minimal helpful feedback, and I feel so lost on how to maintain my footing in my program. I feel like I'm not cut out for this, but I don’t want to give up.

Okay, sob story is over. I need advice here. My pi got a grant in with research very similar to what I've been writing up and said no one has claimed any part of it for their own. Honestly, I don't know what that means. What I do know, is I want to claim it.

I have this grant that my pi wrote up and, in his words, kinda put fillers in for the methods and locations. What do I have to do to make this research part of my first chapter so I can get a committee and not be a waste of funding? Am I allowed to do that?

Any and all advice is so absolutely appreciated, I don’t have any other PhD students in the lab and my pi is out of office for the summer and I'm a first gen college student so I am turning the internet for help. Thank you so so much

27 [F4R] #Online - Scientist looking for good conversation

Hi everyone, I'm Elaine. I am a researcher finally settling into a career and, hopefully, a stable place in my life. I left my friends and family back home to move to a new city and I've been struggling to make friends.

I'm in a time in my life where I feel in purgatory of outgrowing my past and not yet fitting into my future. Im hopefully looking to talk to someone who is nerdy (STEM, fantasy, sci-fi, or etc), settled into their career or in graduate school, and a yapper. I think I would relate to someone like that the best!

About me: I'm a huge nerd. I love reading, writing, watching movies, and playing video games. I'm mostly into rpgs like Skyrim and I am dying to get into ttrpgs after playing BG3 for 400 hours.

If you're looking for good conversation starters:
- Tell me what type would your gym be and what your ace pokemon would be.
- What song you've had on repeat this week.
- The last movie you watched in theaters
- Your last DnD character's backstory (so I can live vicariously through you)

Alright, well, this was a dissertation in itself so if you've read this far send me a message! I'm looking forward to meeting you!

Morally corrupt red dye user

I love dying my hair, specifically I love using semi-permanent red dye that bleeds and stains and gives me a very stylish bleeding scalp look when I sweat at the gym.

Another fact about me is that I am a lazy renter who is very tired of scrubbing Arctic Fox Wrath out of my white bathtub.

I plan to a round of splat in hopes it'll last longer and bleed less, but I am very aware that will never come out of my tub and I will never get my security deposit back.

Is it wrong of me to go to my local gym with dye in, pretend to work out for a few, then hit the showers and wash my dye out in their black tiled bathroom? My other option is see if I can use a hose outside but I doubt my neighbors want to watch me do a bad remake of the iconic water dance scene from Flashdance.
