Brief Showcase of Kwaju Script

As soon as I saw this sub-reddit here, I knew I had to get my stuff on here.

This is Kwaju Script, derived from "Kwa Watu Wa Jua," or "For the People of the Sun" in Swahili. The script is a hybrid abugida for Swahili that's heavily inspired by Meroitic Cursive and Ge'ez scripts. This project Is my attempt to inspire people to use, or to make African scripts to be used and shared for their native languages by making it fun and easy to write. It can be written both horizontally and vertically in a left to right format.

The script has grown and changed a lot over the past few days, so there may be some errors within the script that differentiates from the given key.

I really do wanna make this script as easy and as fun to write as possible, so I ask for your thoughts and feedback on the script! (PLEASE)

note: Z, W, S and the E vowel marker have changed from previous iterations of the script.

Kwaju Script Comic Test

Kwaju Script, or the Kwaju writing system, is an experimental writing system that aims to create a fun and aesthetic way to represent Swahili.

This is a doodle containing very random dialogue. Did you know that Kwaju Script can write vertically? (up to down, left to right) And that the : spacer is back in fashion???

You can decode the dialogue if you want, however the dialogue may not make sense. It might, but you never know.

What do you think of this? Let me know your thoughts!

One Piece pages written in Kwaju

Kwaju Script, or the Kwaju writing system, is an experimental writing system that aims to create a fun and aesthetic way to represent Swahili.

These pages were really fun to transcribe. I really enjoyed making it, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. The original Swahili pages and the key are included in this post.

If you have any thoughts, please share them!

Kwaju handwriting in action

Kwaju Script, or the Kwaju writing system, is an experimental writing system that aims to create a fun and aesthetic way to represent Swahili.

This is a handwriting test. The written material is The Universal Declaration of Human Rights articles one and two. It took forever to transcribe.

How to write extended vowels in Kwaju

Kwaju Script, or the Kwaju writing system, is an experimental writing system that aims to create a fun and aesthetic way to represent Swahili.

This mini-lesson focuses on repeating vowels in Kwaju syllable blocks [CVV], and shows how to write them.

This has been a recurring problem for me as I've been developing the script, but I believe that this will make many words across languages easier to write.

The key/guide sheet has been included in this post for reference. Feel free to try to decode the quote; bonus points if you post or comment a word or phrase using the script that contains an extended vowel!

Edit: extended vowel markers are good for clean blocks in handwriting, but may be harder to implement as a digital font. Therefore you can choose whether or not you use the extended vowel system!

Wartime poster transcribed in Chivabwe

I found a really cool brush for a drawing program I used and I figured it would be fun to transcribe some swahili media to chivabwe. may look rough though, but i honestly think the fact alone that chivabwe can be made to look official in a poster is great.

i'm not entirely sure about where the poster is from, but i'm assuming it's a kenyan or tanganyikan world war 2 poster made during late world war 2. again, i'm not entirely sure of it's origin

More practice + secret Swahili proverb

Gave up on trying to find a shorthand for now, but as soon as I find a sort of “cursive” for this I’ll let you guys know.

Do you guys think African languages should have their own writing systems or is it too impractical?

Hey guys, this might be a question worth mentioning- do you guys think African languages should have more mainstream indigenous writing system to use alongside Latin scripts or is it too impractical? Would you learn it or would you prefer Latin?

I personally think having more widespread, culturally unique scripts would give us cultural distinction from other cultures and could carry cultural pride throughout Africa. We’d also have linguistic independence from our older colonial writing systems. But I wanna hear what you guys think!

Do you think Swahili should have its own indigenous writing system or nah?

Habari! This might be a question worth mentioning- do you guys think Swahili should have an indigenous writing system to use alongside Swahili (like Mandombe or another script) or is it too impractical? Would you learn it or would you prefer Latin?

I ask this cause the only indigenoua script swahili users actively use is mandombe, which is only used in a concentrated group in Congo. Before the British came and introduced Latin we used Ajami, and again, neither were our own.

I personally think having a unique script would give us cultural distinction from other cultures and could carry cultural pride within East Africa. We’d also have linguistic independence from our older colonial writing systems. But I wanna hear what you guys think!

Wrote a short paragraph from Godzilla Minus One

I thought it would have been cool to see what a paragraph would look like written in chivabwe swahili, so thats what i did.
This one might be rough though, cause i didn’t rely entirely on the digital library this time. I actually picked up on a few symbols.

Nontheless this was really fun to make. Someone’s gotta make a full page of chivabwe now, otherwise I will 😁

Trying out this custom script for swahili

This is a pan-african script called chivabwe, which you can find on its own subreddit. I really like it as a script that can potentially be widely used, and i think it looks pretty cool in writing.

Thoughts on the East African Community/Federation?

I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that the East African Community is the closest thing that we have to true pan-Africanism, and I really, REALLY wanna see it turn into a greater East African Federation. I say this as a South Sudanese diaspora, it would be a really great thing for both me, and millions of other people to see their home country industrialize and become a global player.

The obstacles however are hard to ignore. We have honestly shit leaders who'd let their whole country fall to foreign powers as long as they get to have power. They'd choose to let the west import their hand-me-down textiles into the country and let the Chinese build their cities instead of advocating and building long term economic integration and free movement of goods and people. Not to mention shaky diplomatic ties between certain countries causing border closures that hinder progress.

My opinion is that in order for a true pan-African state-- that is, the East African Federation, to happen, we need leaders that actually care about democracy and diplomatic relations with other East African states, and who cares about integrating further EAC policies. And we shouldn't just wait for a government to make these changes for us, we as citizens and diaspora have to trust each other and put aside national/ethnic differences in order to unify the people as well (which is what the movement of people should be able to do) have to spread the word, to inspire future leaders and the booming youth with the promise of being one unified self-sustaining state that successfully maintains its own cultural and economic independence.

But I wanna hear second opinions on the East African Community. Do you think there'll be any more considerable progress in the future?
