Loved this moment from All New Wolverine #14

I've been re-reading Tom Taylor's All New Wolverine again, and I forgot how awesome this moment was from Enemy Of The State!!!

Laura knows The Facility is after her again, and she's trying to be a Good Samaritan and help the authorities. She's trying to work with SHIELD, but Nick Fury isn't listening.

A shield agent punches Laura, and she responds with a *LOOK*. Then she finally shows the reader a bit of what she can *actually* do.

I bet it reads so differently for a new reader who doesn't know Laura Kinney. The comic had been pretty tame up until that point. Rescuing squirrels and fighting a giant gozilla monster and stuff, but Laura had barely fought people or let loose X-23 style before this moment.

The average reader might be forgiven for reading the scene and feeling like Laura's lost control of the situation. But those of us who know her history know that she was in complete control the whole time, and that *look* is just the moment she ran out of patience with SHIELD's bullshit.

Hot Take: I do not understand the appeal of Cable. Like... at all.

I'm sure you'll all make me pay for this one, but screw it...

I hate Cable. He's so lame. I hate his stupid brick face and refrigerator body. I hate his football/scuba armour and his ridiculous guns. I hate his grimace and his grunting mumbling and his stoic bullshit and his stupid metal arm. He looks like an aging WWE wrestler, and his personality is "what if Logan, but all the interesting bits are gouged out with an ice-cream scoop?" "What if an edgy 12-year-old kid had just seen Terminator and Commando and wanted to trademark their own rip-off combo character?"

He's now been at the centre of X-Men '97, and a main character in Deadpool 2, and a centrepeice of X-men and Deadpool comics for decades and I have never understood his appeal. Is it the guns? The biceps? The attitude? Like what the hell do you people see in this character? WHY IS CABLE???

Realistically working X-23 into X-Men '97

(Art by Nakashima8Kazuma)

After Laura was hinted at in the most recent season, I'm curious what everyone's theories are on her being worked in. Given the pace and focus of the show, how would it realistically happen?

Like... it would be in the single Wolverine (Logan) episode per season, because of course. And a lot of other things would change and condense too:

- You'd have to use mostly characters which are already there,

- and she'd have very limited cameos across the rest of the season (mostly in fight scenes).

- obviously Laura is not the focus of the series. She'd be a cameos and a side-note at best in '97 :(

So how would it work?

***

I'd put her in near the start of the Decimation season S3/S4 (because the Decimation/Messiah/Utopia era needs a full season).

SEASON 3 - in episode 3 or 4 - The Decimation has already occured. Logan, Morph, Angel, Psylocke and Cable (maybe Bishop) are a proto Kyle/Yost X-Force hunting Purifiers. Their methods are brutal and Morph hates it. The team finds Laura captured and being tortured by Purifiers. They free Laura. We get a few flashbacks to her origin, including Sarah naming her. Laura joins X-Force and spends the season at Logan's side, fighting the Purifiers and other enemies while Xavier and the OG team grapples with Mutantkind's new position in the world, and the politics of Survival versus Heroism. They also catch wind of a black ops team within their own ranks which is killing humans to defend mutantkind. At the end of the season it is revealed that !!!SHOCKER!!! Scott formed X-Force out of necessity and it causes a huge rift between him and Jean.

Given that Weapon X, Lies and Videotape ended with Logan and morph lamenting the lack of his humanity, as the season progresses, Logan, with assistance from Morph, takes on a fatherly role for Laura and grows to love her. The season ends with him sacrificing himself to save her (Death of Wolverine) and the team. Laura leaves the X-Men behind as part of the season finale's final closing montage.

SEASON 4 - In this season, the X-Men would be split into 2 groups: Cyclops's extremist team, and Jean's school-based team. Beast is going nuts trying to solve the Decimation, but the situation has stabilized for mutants. Xavier is missing, and over the course of the season it is revealed that he's building Krakoa. The season ends with Krakoa's creation as the teams reunite to fight the Big Bad.

In episode 3 or 4, Laura would have one episode, or maybe a half-episode for herself. She is wandering (Liu's X-23), lost after Logan's death. She meets up with Morph, who takes on Gambit's role. Laura already has blue and yellow highlights in her hair. They fight one or two of Logan's old enemies - definitely Sabertooth. Maybe Deathstrike? They save innocent people from Logan's villains and Laura gets to show off her skills as she peices herself back together and discovers her moral compass with Morph's help. At the end of the episode, she puts on the All New Wolverine suit and joins Jean's Academy.

Season 5 - Krakoa. All mutantkind united, but Beast Breaks Bad and the season finale is Krakoa crumbling under the dual threats of Beast, and outside pressure from humanity.

Logan gets resurrected. In a 1/2 episode story, Laura finds out she has a clone sister named Gabby. The two of them get cameos while Logan (sigh) takes on the Wolverine role again. Except for the Sabertooth War episode, which would be the "Wolverine" episode of the season. Sabertooth clones himself and his clone army attacks Logan and Laura. They have to fight their way out and finally kill Sabertooth.

That's what I'd do to realistically fit her in. How would you do it?

Advocating for Laura on the main X-Men subreddit?

So one thing I've noticed is that when it comes to other X-Characters (Magik, Psylock, Wolverine (Logan), etc), there's a lot of crossover between their individual subs and the X-Men 97 sub and the main X-Men sub... corssposts and copied posts.

Not so with Laura. We're all very self-contained here. I barely see Laura-related posts on the main sub anymore.

Perhaps that should change?

If we want to keep reading Laura comics, then maybe we need to start raising her profile a little bit to remind everyone how awesome she is. The besy comics get around through word-of-mouth, and we all seem to generally like Jody Houser's work on Generation X-23.

Shouldn't we be ringing the bells to tell everyone what they've been missing out on?

The Yin and Yang of Laura Kinney

In all seriousness I'm loving the art in Gen X-23 #6! Emilio Laiso gets Laura right. Every so often, a pose or an expression will remind you that the young woman is still X-23: The Living Weapon.

Infiltrators vs Incursors?

I play space marines but haven't had much contact with Phobos-heavy armies.

What the heck is the difference between Incursors and Infiltrators???

From what I can tell Incursors belong on the front line to reinforce better units with their hit buffs, and infiltrators are a backline unit to stop your opponent's deepstrikes...

Is that it? Are there lore differences?

I'm probably just a dummy but I just don't really understand why these are two separate units...

Can someone make it make sense for my pea brain?

So that's 100% Robo-Kimura Laura's fighting in Gen-X #9, right?

Can we please get some new villains in the next run. Kimura was a great villain character. She had a great run, and a fantastic death! Leave it alone. Make up some new villains and new stories for Laura instead.

Hive by Dan Abnett is a f*cking TRIUMPH!!!

I just want to take a moment to appreciate Dan Abnett's Hive duology.

What a masterpiece!!! Not just a great 40K novel, but a great speculative science fiction novel in general!

I love it!

I love that the structure is a whodunit, where you know everything is going to go wrong but you don't know how or who the culprits will be.

I love that you see glimpses and little stories from the very lowest of Hive workers to the very highest of the governers. I love the little tweaks of the language (ecja, chofa, jheek) which makes the world feel so ancient and lived in.

I love how human everything is. There are no real superpowers or superhuman abilities on display. There are no feats a regular human could not achieve.

I love how vast the hive is! I was alternating between claustrophobia in the underhive and agoraphobia and megalophobia in the open spaces beneath the dome!

I love a million other things too many to list without spoilers fuck this book is so good!!!

Also Cherish and Loria were my favorite characters. Their story was so cute... until it wasn't :(

Gabby is in United X-Men #5!

To my disappointment, Laura is not in United X-Men #5. They are trying to balance a massive ensemble cast, and she had a lead role in the first arc...

But GABBY is!!! And she takes a lead role in it! The Shadow King is the enemy, and I hope the writers remember what happened on Krakoa. Gabby has personal beef with this villain! I do hope Laura makes an appearance to help Gabby kick his ass.

Also Laura owe's Rahne Sinclair a beatdown over her handing Gabby to him on Krakoa. Do not forget or forgive her for that one.

So... it's Logan's birthday. Sabertooth goes after Laura. How does she handle it?

He finds her in an urban street envioronment - her home turf. Sabertooth would be at his most ruthless and brutal. Laura is at her Kyle/Yost levels of cunning and strategic. How does it play out?

Would tge outcome change if the encounter happened in the wilderness?

Saying it loudly for the people in the back: LAURA IS NOT X-23!!!

For some insane reason once again we need to remind everyone who may feel that Laura is somehow more "free" as X-23 than Wolverine...

X-23 is not Laura's name. It was a designation the Facility gave her so that she *wouldn't* have a name, so that they could torture her and hurt her, and make her hurt others without feeling guilty. As X-23, Laura is not a person. She has been Dehumanized; made to be seen as less than human.

We see this in the real world every time the media and politicians call an immigrant an illegal alien, or when someone who disagrees with the government gets called a criminal. It is a signal to the dumbest of us that we don't have to think of them as people anymore and it works too well too often. Dehumanization is a means by which the powerful shut down our empathy, our curiosity, and our morals. It is cruel people telling us to just "look away" from their acts of cruelty so that we can feel comfortable.

We appear to have a lot of new Laura "fans" on this sub who hate that she bears Logan's code name alongside him because "something something there's only one Wolverine" and that she should go back to being X-23. I can't imagine a more insulting betrayal of not just her as a character, but Logan as well.

Her story is *his* too, and Wolverine's origin stories should stand as reminders to us that when we look away, helpless people, innocent people and get hurt, tormented and sometimes killed by the *REAL* monsters.

Laura is Wolverine. Maybe in the future she'll pick a new code name for herself. But she sure as hell is NOT X-23!

Kitbashed/Alternatives for Grotesques and other units?

Hi all! Just wondering what cool kitbashes and alternate models you're for units like the Grotesques, and other weird Homunculus monstrosities!

So... X-Infinite is going to die, right?

I mean... he's going to. It's comicbook rules; he screwed up by experimenting on his brothers and sisters and now karma is coming...

My guess: he dies holding off Mech-Kimura while Laura and the rest escape.

What other last-minute predictions can be made?

Maybe time for a new suit?

(Art by Mathieu Moreau)

I'm really digging this reimagining of Laura's uniform.

I do love Laura as Wolverine, but I also want the costume and vibe to be *hers*, not Logan's, and I gotta admit, the Krakoa costume is starting to feel a little old. I hope that in Gen X-23 she gets a change or an update to help set her apart.

Could always return to Tom Taylor's black and grey, too. But I kinda like how celebratory this one feels, retaining the black and gold. Just needs a cowl with the hair free...

Hot Take: Iskandar Khayon is kinda lame

I just finished Talon of Horus and guys... I don't really like Iskandar Khayon. I think he's kinda lame. He feels like a teenager's self-insert Mary-Sue. With the awesome wolf demon his dark eldar hottie and the coolest weapon and unlimited powers...

The story itself was interesting. I liked seeing the origin of the black legion it was well written. I found the infighting of the traitor legions fascinating, as well as the clear PTSD he had from the Burning of Prospero, but yeah... Khayon was kinda lame in a childish OP kinda way.

I humbly await your hatred and bile.

Laura in X-Men United #3: The right sentiment, the wrong voice

I'm surprised more people aren't talking about this issue. There's a lot to like here. For one thing, she's acrobatic, flying over the heads of everyone else to engage the enemy, which is a MUCH APPRECIATED detail; her fighting style is and always should be different from Logan's.

But she also gets to share her trauma about what happened to Sarah Kinney, and how Laura's lived with the guilt, but still used the chance Sarah gave her. It's a touching moment, and a pretty big moment for Laura. She actually gets to resolved the whole situation and be the star of the show, at least as far as the X-Team is concerned.

My only complaint is that the writers still don't have her voice right. She's still talking more like Logan than herself. Marvel's writing team really needs to reread Tom Taylor's work at least. Try to get a better feel for who Laura is and how she interacts with others.

Aside from that, pretty solid issue, and a good Laura issue.
