Terminator Chaplain conversion – looking for suggestions before I start painting

I’ve just about finished converting the Leviathan Terminator Captain into a Black Templars Terminator Chaplain.

The conversion is made from:

  • Leviathan Terminator Captain as the main body.
  • A random top ornament from the Space Marine Reliquary Backpack by Render_Rodriguez: Space Marine Reliquary Backpack
  • The mace from the free Reaper Chaplain model by Skarpzon, scaled to fit: Reaper Chaplain
  • I scraped off most of the Imperialis from the chest, leaving the skull.
  • I also added a few 1mm chains, following some suggestions I got on a previous post.
  • The rest of the bits are from GreyTideStudio’s Battle Priest: GreyTideStudio – Battle Priest
  • Couple bits from the Sword Brethren box.

What do you guys think? Is there anything obvious you would add or change before I call the conversion done? Something about the top ornament feels a little bit off; too pinty? Too tall?

Any criticism or suggestions are welcome.

First Black Templars – happy with them, but something feels off

Just finished my first three Black Templars, going for a somewhat EOB-inspired style.

I’m still struggling with getting a clean finish. Compared to some of the models I see online, my brushwork looks quite rough and almost has a slapchop feel to it, which isn’t really what I’m going for.

Overall I’m pretty happy with them, but there’s something about the overall look that doesn’t quite feel right to me. I can’t really put my finger on it. Could it be the bad primer work due to humidity, the slightly fuzzy finish, the colour choices, or maybe the zenithal technique?

Needless to say that gloss finish from Vallejo washes is terrible.

Would love to hear what you guys think and what you’d change.

WIP: Tau-equipped Kroot Kindred – New direction after your feedback

A few days ago I posted my first Tau-inspired Kroot conversion. After reading your feedback, I decided to rethink the project and tone it down a little.

The plan is to build a 10-model Kroot Carnivore squad, and this is about as Tau-fied as they’ll get. I don’t want them to become Fire Warriors with Kroot heads or just Kroot with random Tau bits glued on. The idea is to represent a veteran Kindred that has spent years fighting alongside the Tau and gradually adopted some of their equipment while still keeping its own identity.

The squad will include a mix of:
- Tau optics fitted to Kroot rifles.
- Custom Kroot heads with Tau visors and antennas.
- A few shoulder pads, knee pads and backpacks.
- Tactical pouches and communication gear.
- A handful of adapted Fire Warrior chest plates used as armour.
- A converted support drone carrying supplies and providing light fire support.

Every model will be different. Some will be almost entirely Kroot, while others will carry a little more Tau equipment, but none will be more Tau-fied than the ones shown here.

For the paint scheme, I’m planning warm bone-coloured skin, black quills, pink armour and equipment to match the rest of my Tau army, and bright blue lenses and optics. I’m hoping the warm skin contrasts nicely with the colder Tau technology while still tying the whole squad into the rest of the force.

After the feedback on my previous post, I’ll also be removing or sanding away the Fire Caste symbols where possible. Even though the rule of cool definitely comes first for me, I agree those markings don’t really fit the lore.

I’d love to hear what you think. Does this feel like a believable Tau-allied Kroot Kindred? Is there anything you’d change to make them feel more naturally integrated, rather than just Kroot with Tau bits attached?

First Tau-Equipped Kroot Test Model – Does It Still Read as Kroot?

I’ve started working on a Tau-equipped Kroot Kindred, and this is my first test model.

The idea isn’t to turn them into Pathfinders or Strike team, but to represent a Kindred that has fought alongside the Tau for so long that they’ve gradually adopted Tau equipment while still remaining unmistakably Kroot.

For the squad as a whole, I don’t want them to be uniform. The plan is to mix different Kroot torsos, various Tau backpacks, different weapon conversions, and not every model will have shoulder pads or the same amount of Tau gear. I want them to look like individuals rather than mass-produced soldiers, while still sharing the same colour scheme and overall aesthetic.

This particular model uses:
- Classic Kroot body, head and arms.
- Original Kroot torso.
- Tau backpack.
- Tau shoulder pad.
- Tau knee pad.
- Tau pouches and equipment bits.
- Converted rifle made from a drone weapon.
- Original Kroot trophies and feathers.

Some models will have more Tau equipment, others less, and not all of them will have shoulder pads or backpacks.

Does it still read as Kroot to you?

C&C welcome!

Magnet sizes for T'au bases?

I'm finally getting around to magnetizing my T'au army and wanted to see what everyone else is using.

At the moment I need magnets for Breachers, Kroot and a Commander, but I'm not sure what to do about the flying bases. How are you magnetizing those, and what magnet sizes are you using?

Thanks!

Returning to T'au after many years – what do you think of my casual army list?

I'm returning to Warhammer after a long break. Even back when I first collected miniatures I never really played, but this time I'd like to build an army that's at least reasonably playable while still following the "rule of cool".

At the moment, my T'au collection consists of:

  • 1 Devilfish with a custom commander conversion
  • 2 Piranhas with burst cannons
  • 10 Fire Warriors (Strike Team with pulse rifles)
  • 10 Breachers
  • 1 custom Coldstar Commander

I'm planning to add a unit of XV8 Crisis Suits in the future, but for now I'm focusing on painting what I already have before expanding further.

One thing I've realised is that I'm not really drawn to the really large battlesuits like the Riptide or Stormsurge. I seem to prefer the more grounded, military side of the T'au aesthetic: infantry, vehicles, drones and the smaller battlesuits.

One future project I'm particularly excited about is a unit of Kroot conversions. The idea is to represent a long-integrated auxiliary unit using Fire Warrior torsos, backpacks and armour pieces mixed with Kroot heads, limbs and equipment, to create Kroot that have gradually adopted T'au technology while still looking unmistakably Kroot.

From the perspective of someone interested in casual games rather than competitive play, what do you think of the collection so far? Does it feel like a fun and reasonably functional T'au force, or are there any obvious additions you'd recommend down the line?

Finished the crew for my first T’au Piranha – thoughts on the colour scheme?

Working on the crew for my first T’au Piranha! I recently returned to the hobby after a 14-year break and decided to start a T’au army with a custom scheme: pink armour, white rank markings and bright electric blue energy effects.

These are some of the first infantry-sized models I’ve painted with it, and I’m really happy with how they’re turning out. Any feedback is welcome!

Returning to Warhammer after 14 years – starting a new T'au army from scratch and ended up with this colour scheme. What do you think?

Hi everyone,

After about 14 years away from the hobby, I've recently come back and decided to start completely from scratch with a new T'au army.

I wanted to avoid simply copying an existing sept scheme, so I've been experimenting until I found something that felt right for me. The main armour colour is pink, combined with dark grey/black mechanical elements, white rank markings and bright electric blue for lenses, sensors and energy effects.

The idea is that white becomes more prominent on higher-ranking units and characters, while line troops remain predominantly pink.

This Piranha is one of the first vehicles I've painted with the scheme. I'm quite happy with how the pink and white work together, although I'm still debating one detail: the black armour panels on the front of the engine nacelles. Originally I painted them black, but I'm considering repainting them pink so that black is reserved only for mechanical parts, vents and weapons.

I'd really appreciate any feedback, especially on:

  • The overall colour balance.
  • Whether the black engine panels work or should be pink.
  • The use of white as a rank identifier.
  • Any ideas for T'au markings, decals or other details that would help tie the army together.

Thanks for taking a look!
