Still need an emperor's champion and a master of the forge, but really happy with how these came out.
Brothers, I have finished my brutalis’ paint job and was looking for some feedback on it. I’m also a little scared to base my minis so if you have tips for easy but effective ways to do that I’d love to hear about those too😊
Crusader Ancient Hektor Valerius — Bearer of the Last Litany
A Black Templars Crusader Ancient, forged in the grim darkness of the 41st Millennium.
Among the Black Templars, the Ancient does not merely carry a banner — he carries the memory of the fallen. Where the Crusade marches, his sacred standard bears witness to every oath sworn, every brother lost, and every enemy brought low. To falter beneath its shadow is unthinkable; to see it still flying is to know that the Crusade endures.
I wanted this mini to look like exactly that kind of relic: battered by war, steeped in devotion, and almost more shrine than warrior. The main banner is covered in scripture decals, while chains and skulls adorn the shield, giving the whole piece the suitably excessive devotional character of the sons of Dorn... I think.
The base was built up with modelling putty to continue the destroyed urban theme running through the rest of my Black Templars army — as though the Ancient has carried his sacred standard through the ruins of countless worlds.
A relic of the Crusade. A keeper of its oaths. A banner that will not fall.
NO PITY. NO REMORSE. NO FEAR. 🖤⚔️
Weird headcannon I wanted to share. May ruffle some feathers, but I play casually and enjoy the modelling and painting of 40k, so this won’t ever make it to a proper tournament.
I gather that if Black Templars were crusading long and far enough, their logistic support and resupply may become… strained. So in order to keep killing the enemies of the Emperor, they may need to improvise (without verging on heresy).
That being said, (and given that I kind of want to work with minis outside of 40k) some proxies I’ve found for Brutalis and Redemptor dreadnoughts are these from Warmachine. Plugger as a Brutalis and a Bandit as a Redemptor. Almost a sort of steampunk version put together using whatever imperial worlds have to offer. They’d need some kitbashing and different bases to get to the right size for the tabletop.
Has anyone else done something similar they’d like to share? Or how do people feel about this? (I’m going to do it regardless - I’m just interested).
I modified my sword brethen to dual wield chainswords. Sorry for the rough painting
I am new to Templars and it sounds ridiculous I know, but I just found I have 6 bladeguard and a Judiciar. 3 I knew of from the combat patrol which I hadn't built because it seems conventional wisdom is that they don't suit BT so well. Then when I was looking for something else and had a look in my old Indomitus box and realized I had 3 more bladeguard plus the Judiciar still new on sprue.
I guess I'm wondering if I should list them for sale and use the $ to buy a Repulsor Executioner or if the unit still has legs. I have an impulsor to carry them around if that makes a difference.
How would you decide if you wanted to keep or offload them?
I’ve just about finished converting the Leviathan Terminator Captain into a Black Templars Terminator Chaplain.
The conversion is made from:
What do you guys think? Is there anything obvious you would add or change before I call the conversion done? Something about the top ornament feels a little bit off; too pinty? Too tall?
Any criticism or suggestions are welcome.
And I’m not an expert in doing books!
I have a Black Templar Combat Patrol box I've yet to open. I keep going back and forth with the chapter. I enjoy the lore / themeing etc, but I am a little concerned the army may play a little bit one note.
It seems between the Crusaders / Sword Brethren / Detachments / Vows it feels like there aren't going to be as many tactical decisions as it seems like the goal is get in Melee and hit stuff. Any range / other option seems like it may just simply be better with a more standard SM army.
I'm just a little worried it may be a little boring to play. Obviously I know I'm speaking to a biased crowd, but curious what you all think.
I got the intro intercessor paint pack and decided to paint the intercessors Templar, my first models.
Took a while, but with determination and losing by my opponent getting battle ready points, the crusade fleet is ready.

Our winrate is 🤮, but that doesn't mean that in the last year plus i havent had some of the most fun playing BT. Some things I'd like to see change or inspired from our cousins across the isle...the World Eaters. We both detest psykers and love a good scrap. So lets compare WE blessings and BT vows.
Blessings
+1 to charge - we can get advance/charge on a stick so meh
Pile in and consolidate 6 - this is good, id love this over the current wording of suffer not the unclean
FoD 4+- we have this on a stick (character) so no needs as a vow
Sus1- built into alot of our profiles
Lethals- also built into alot of our profiles as well as on a stick
Devs vs infantry- this id take over the current abhor the witch
As for unique units
Castellan- No Change
Grimaldus- nc
Crusader Ancient- nc
Crusader Sq- nc
EC- nc
Execrator- nc
Helbrecht- keep the +1a, +1s 2nd ability chooses a 2nd vow to be active for the unit (lead by example)
Marshall- nc
Sword Bros- i hate their ability. They should delete anything they touch so the fallback move makes little sense. So i suggest a 4++ in combat, much akin to the judichoppa
Terminators- nc
Have to finish dulling transfers and add some seals but this is my kill team from the extra models and bits I had.
I combined the two different Sgt’s. Hopefully he’s correct and usable as WYSIWYG.
