Thinking about solar in Illinois (1)

Got our first EV a few months ago and got the wife one a couple of weeks ago. Right now I'm working on installing more CT's in my panels on my house (2 x 200 amp) and writing software to log it to a database. I've had the monitoring equipment for a long time but really only started seriously playing with it and testing it for accuracy this week. (3 Brultech ECM-1240's).

Got to figure out where all the power is going, what waste can be reduced so that I can build a solar system to cover as much of our power consumption as possible. My electric furnace/heat pump eats me alive in the winter so I'm putting in a new furnace and heat pump in before winter.

I'm using System Advisor model to try and design the system.

(2) EG4-18kPV

(48) Trina TSM-595 TOPCon panels (Ground Mount 6 strings of 8 panels)

System advisor model will only let me model 1 inverter at a time so the SAM graph is for 1 18kPV and 24 panels.

I know in Illinois that only solar systems set before 2025 get full net metering. I believe now you only get credit for the supply portion. Eventually I'd like to add batteries to the system to help reduce the buyback on power.

Is there any way to play music from USB that doesn’t suck?

Love the car but managing media is ass.

Playing music from USB is an exercise is shoving an ice pick in to your eye.

can’t create playlists, doesn’t resume play when you get in the car. Can’t browse or search while moving. Can’t scroll.

Tried anexplorer, audio wagon, the stock USB app.

Audiowagon I have to give it permission every single time I get in the car to access the USB drive.

I just fired NUCO2... feels good

Fucking with NUCO2 has been a pastime for me for a decade+.

https://old.reddit.com/r/BarOwners/comments/1mpu6tr/fn_nuco2

Fun fact, NUCO2 just re-added powermonitor rent to my most recent bill.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BarOwners/comments/ubvml5/who_use_nuco2_check_yo_bills

4 1/2 years ago I had them pull their nitrogen generator. At the rent I was being charged when I had them pull it I was paying $316.94 a month. I would have spent just shy of $16,480 in rent on it since then (assuming they didn't increase the price). Factoring in their historical rate increases on the bulk tank I still have from them I would have spent in excess of $20,000. That $7682.94 nitrogenerator I bought and installed sure looks pretty f'n good right now. I would probably be paying $6k in rent on it per year by now.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BarOwners/comments/gi2l8y/nuco2_thats_just_rude_man/

I still have their 250lb bulk tank. Four years ago that tank cost $123.03 in rent a month Three years ago that tank cost $140.50 a month Two years ago that tank cost $159.03 a month. That tank this year costs $188.02 a month.

14 years ago the rent on that tank was $47.88. A 14 year increase of almost 300%. Meanwhile CPI/Inflation was about 45% over that same time period.

That's a 53% increase in four years. It's bullshit. It's not like that tank is a recurring cost for them. That tank was manufactured in 2004, 22 years ago. They recouped the cost of that tank in rent a very very long time ago. It costs them nothing to have it sitting on location. It's not a wear item and requires no maintenance. Them repeatedly cranking up the cost to rent it

I finally pulled the trigger and bought my own bulk CO2 (Carbomizer 450lb) and installed it last month.

I paid $3k for a 450 Carbomizer. At the current $188.02 in rent for their tank the ROI is 16 months. Assuming another 9% rent increase next year rent would jump to $204.94. ROI then drops to 13 months.

NUCO2 bulk CO2 is currently $0.71/lb. Last year it was $0.61/lb. Four years ago it was $0.47/lb. A four year increase of 51%

I can get bulk CO2 from Ozarcgas @ $0.55/lb. With the larger 450lb tank I would only need a delivery every 3 to 4 months.

Taking on 400lbs at a time:
NUCO2 = $284 Ozarc = $220

NUCO2 come get your shit off my property

Shift4 and the Jared Isaacman rabbit hole

All the shitty unethical practices from Shit4 aside I saw a reply in the other thread about their Founder/CEO going to space. So lets see what 'ole Jared has been getting up to.

Isaacman is a Trump/MAGA megadonor

He was nominated by Trump to be the Administator of NASA as soon as he took office in 2025. Trump pulled the nomination after it passed the Senate committee because he found out Isaacman had previously donated to democrats.

After having his nomination pulled Isaacman made two $1 million dollar donations to MAGA Inc. and another $500k to other republican PACS.

He was immediately renominated and made administrator of NASA.

But it gets better!

On Feb 22, 2010 US Customs and Border Patrol put out a press release titled “Nevada Fugitive Captured at Canadian Border".

https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/nevada-fugitive-captured-canadian-border

This fugitive was none other than Jared Isaacman who was charged for fraud for writing $2 million dollars in bad checks to casinos in three states. One of those casinos, which sued him, was none other than Trumps Taj Mahal.

Here's a nice article on Isaacman illegally diverting clients from CardConnect to shift4 and fabricating "fake traffic" for shift4.

https://www.technology.org/2025/06/04/jared-isaacmans-fall-from-business-trust-from-cardconnect-trouble-to-space-aspirations/

Maybe a class action against Jared?

How about 4.7M in payments to executive relatives off the books?

Does anyone do bulk fryer oil?

Does anyone have a bulk fryer oil tank that you have a service that fills up rather than buying 35lb containers of fryer oil from distributors?

If so, what are you paying per lb for bulk soy oil

OMG FUCK YOU SHIFT4. (check you bill)

  • UPDATE *. If you can make it through the AI bullshit the AI agent will credit you the annual service and maintenance fee but not help with any of the other bullshit fees. Shift4 must be getting absolutely hammered by merchants right now. I can not get past the AI to a real person to deal with the other fees.

  • UPDATE *. Got through to a real person who could only help me with the "online ordering enablement" fee but none of the others. He had to transfer me into a hold queue and said it could be hours and admitted that they were getting absolutely hammered today by merchants.

$2000 annual service and maintenance fee put on my bill for July. (We own our equipment outright, we had it way before shit4 came into the picture). We have never got a printer, pos terminal or any other device other than the EMV readers from Shift4 which they charge me $120 a year for each one of them)

Monthly (and this is just the obvious ones) $10 x 6 ($60) emv maintenance fee (I only have 4) $20 Lighthouse portal (to access their website, you pay for that) Month End billing (they charge you to create your statement, they started this in August of last year which was .02% of total transactions. In March of this year they increased that 250% to .05% of total transactions)

Quarterly there is the new "Debit Enablement Quarterly" fee of $20. Which they created in June of 2025.

In May they changed the line from "lighthouse portal" to "customer hub"

In July I had the $2000 annual sevice fee (I own my own pos system) a $6 chargeback that they charged me a "incoming chargeback fee" of $35 to process. They added a new $34.99 for "online ordering enablement" which we don't have online ordering.

Midwest Pancreatic Cancer Charity suggestions

My brother was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer just over two years ago. He just entered hospice care today. My brother is a retired US Army Chinook pilot. After combat tours in the Phillipines (Abu Sayyaf/Dos Palmas kidnappings), two tours in Iraq and two in Afghanistan he flew another 12 years for Arch as a medivac pilot.

For loved ones, as I'm sure you are aware, the futility of not being able to do anything to change the course of your loved ones life is so fucking depressing.

I can't do anything for him but I can try to honor him.

I own a bar & grill that is normally closed on Mondays. I have spoken to staff both current and former about donating their time and tips to open on a Monday from 12am-8pm. I have spoken to distributors who are going to donate product.

I plan to give 100% of the revenue from the day to a Pancreatic Research charity in my brothers name.

I am looking for suggestions for Pancreatic charties that have a very low overhead ratio (where the majority of the money goes to either research or support for victims). I would prefer one in the midwest as we are in the Metro St. Louis region.

I welcome suggestions.

AI slop in your social media posts

Iiam really really beginning to hate all of the restaurants in my area using AI to generate their images in social media posts.

It’s all a bunch of homogenized same same crap. Particularly when it comes to the representation of food in the images. That isn’t your burger. You didn’t just get a sweet still shot of your wings jumping off the plate into the air with confetti.

Particularly egregious, staff photos with years and pounds shaved off smiling in a oh so tight tank top holding a plate of fake ai levitating pork shanks

Do small restaurant owners actually track monthly everything? I do.

Outside of knowing every day exactly where I sit with quickbooks:

My POS is FuturePOS. It is not cloud based and runs on a blade server in one of our server racks. Future runs on a MSSQL back end which, if you know SQL, you can query an infinite number of ways to get the data you want.

I wrote an internal website using perl that allows me to look at anything sales or labor related quickly all the way back to the day we opened.

Sales by month, Sales by month to this day of the month, sales by day, sales by week.

Specials: Graphs how many of the various regular specials sell.

Ticket times. Plots every food ticket from the KDS showing exactly how long the ticket was in the kitchen before it was bumped to the servers.

Individual check lookups. Comped checks, walkouts, house charges.

Individual customer lookups. Every sale since 2012 tagged to a specific customer.

Sales history of any individual item or item group I want to look at.

Labor graphs that plot everything from hours per day to hours used per dollar in food or alcohol sold

Labor reports monthly, daily or weekly that show all clockins and clockouts and calculates labor percentages.

Labor reports on individual employees with clockins/outs, what the prevailing labor % was when they were clocked in and in the case of FoH, tip rates and sales per hour.
