This little beauty was the darling of r/MedievalCreatures a couple of years ago and I thought it had to be shared. Apparently these creatures were common decorative motifs during the 13-15th centuries.

Has anyone here read this classic? I got it in the late 70s at a library book sale for 10 cents and it became my favorite animal story. In time the book fell apart and the only copies I found were first editions costing hundreds. Eventually I got ahold of another paperback version for 30 dollars.
Later I found the version I had and had read was an abridged edition without it's illustrations. Luckily by that time the original version had fallen in the public domain. You can get it for free at Project Gutenburg.
It is written in the style of Black Beauty and chronicles the life of an Irish wolfhound from birth to adulthood. His trials are truly horrid and the book does not tune down the animal abuse common at that time. Finn is stolen and sold to a circus where he is horribly abused before escaping into the Australian outback, joining a pack of dingos, fighting a villainous thylacine, and finally almost dying of starvation. I will not mention the ending as it is unexpected and as a child it truly shocked me.
Here is the cover of my abridged edition and some illustrations from the PD Project Gutenberg 1st edition.
These are a selection of some of the paleoart of the German artist F. John. They are from a series of highly collectible trading cards titled Tiere der Urwelt (Creatures of the Primitive World) that were distributed by the Reichardt Cocoa Company.
He loved to copy Knight but tended to put his own spin on his versions.
My favorites are: The Brontornis (a Cenozoic terror bird) being attacked by an aquatic (and apparently a zombie) Edmontosaurus, the Glyptodon being dive bombed by a ghostly Archaeopteryx, and the amazingly derpy Arctodus 😆
I was talking to a friend about the first book we remembered that were about certain subjects, dinosaurs, mythology, and cryptids. My first cryptid book was The Maybe Monsters by Gardner Soule. I always wondered what the kangaroo headed seal was as it did not fit anything in the book except maybe the Steller's Sea Ape.
So what was your earliest introduction to cryptozoology?
This sub popped up in my feed today and I just had to share my favorite WTF moment from 1962. Considering this was for children I had to do an entire review about it back in 2013. You won't believe how the comic ends 😆
Encountered this earlier this morning. A certain creator and their viewers lobbied for removing AI from YouTube so the site programed the algorithm to not promote AI videos. Now they are reaping the consequences of their witch hunt with the algorithm flagging their own videos as AI. 😆
For some reason my first attempt to share this picture was removed by Reddit's filters, have no idea why. It is a Tyrannosaurus I made for Zoo Tycoon 2 in a deliberately retro style. Even the roar is the one from the 1970s Grumpy (from Land of the Lost) to keep the retro feel. The skin is from my invicta figurine (which alas I no longer have as it got broken when I moved across country). If anyone plays the game it is included in the Flintstone's Pack by Tamara Henson.
I had fun making it, it's like my toy come to life.
Our little Mogwai left to cross the rainbow bridge an hour ago. I had surgery last week and noticed a day later that Mog was struggling to reach her food dish so placed it on the ground (it normally attaches to the second floor of the pen). She was only a few months younger then Phat Boi had been (Phat Boi would have been 5) so about time for arthritis to set in. Yesterday I was finally able to hold them and noticed she was losing weight - not badly but definitely less chubby then she had been.
Today I had to return to work and while there got them some fruit and veggies. She ate a little which reassured me so I took a nap. When I woke up she had passed away. I still have her sister who is just a few months younger. After she passes I think they will be the last pigs for me as it is getting hard for me to take care of them due to my health issues.
RIP little gremlin who liked to tear down my curtains, you will be missed.
P.S. She loved to sleep on or wrapped up in her fleece like in the last picture. i was going to share it for Foot Out Friday but she left to soon.
This is a video by group of Fans who re-drew the MTV Cribs Gorillaz episodes in their own style. Most is a frame by frame re-creation but the epic pissing scene has a new joke that made me choke with laughter.
Happy Birthday to the fictional green man who pays the bass.
