Did anyone ever read Ravens End?

This book was one of my favorites. Growing up partially in Western Canada, this rocky mountain tale was read aloud to us in Class. I later bought the book because I loved it. But new copies are hard to come by sometimes, I got mine used.

This book is about a Raven in the Canadian Rockies who forgets who he is and where he belongs. Along his journey he meets many other ravens and survives harsh seasons to find his original flock

There are many references to real places, particularly the Yamnuska region.

Spiritual, philosophical, political, and beautifully written, Raven’s End is an exciting novel about the lives of ravens. Over the course of four seasons in the spectacular Rocky Mountains, Raven’s End follows the adventures of Colin, a young raven who arrives unexpectedly to join the Raven’s End flock. His newfound friends include Greta, the wise elder; lifelong nestmates Molly and Zack; spunky teenagers, Sarah and Brendan; and the two scoundrels, Dolus and Garth. Among them, Colin learns what it takes to survive: how to fight cold, evade hunters’ guns, fly in hailstorms, and scavenge from wolf kills. Colin participates in the daily ritual of morning Flaps, in which the flock, led by Main Raven, exchanges news about food sources, weather, births, and deaths. After supper the ravens all join in the evening Flight, honing their flying skills with daredevil spins and dives and revelling in the sheer joy of performing their graceful aerial ballet. In between they have adventures involving mountain animals, like bears, wolves, and lynx – including the two-legged upright creatures who always leave them tasty morsels. In the course of the novel we find out that Colin is a raven of exceptional talents and intelligence, who contemplates his mortality, and has the gift of second sight. When he finds himself in a life-or-death struggle against evil, his bravery and leadership save the day. But will he, in his spiritual quest, learn the truth about his origins? Only the spirit of the Great Raven, who visits Colin in disguise, can answer these questions…

The Animals of Farthing Wood - Novel Series

I feel like the Animals of Farthing Wood TV series is more well known than the books, at least from what I’ve seen online. The books are quite different from the TV series. I enjoyed them, though not all of the books were equally as good in my opinion. The prequel (The Adventure Begins) explains how Farthing Wood lost its status as a nature reserve which is why humans start to destroy the wood. The prequel is pretty brutal and depressing, but it’s one of my favourites in the series. The Animals of Farthing Wood shows how the wood has shrunk considerably because of human activity and the remaining animals decide to leave and the book follows their journey across the English countryside to White Deer Park. The rest of the series follows the animals new lives in White Deer Park and new threats from animals already living in the park who don’t like these newcomers and dangers from outside of it.

Werewolf Books or Comic Book Trades/Graphic Novels?

I'm a huge werewolf fan. Does anyone have any recommendations for books or graphic novels that are werewolf centric that aren't Dark Romance books?

The one comic book series I know of that is werewolf centric (and I have) is Moonshine. I know Marvel had a Native American centric comic series where the characters turned into werewolves and I can't remember what it's called (I'm a DC gal). I saw they makers of Invincible put out a Wolf Man trade recently but I don't know if I need to know anything about the main series to enjoy that one or not. So, preferably self contained if comic books.

Spirit Animals - Fantasy Series

So the focus is definitely on the human characters in this series but there’s animals and some of them talk so I’m posting about it here. In my opinion this is a really great fantasy series set in a world where some people get to summon a spirit animal - which is a life long partner that look and act like normal animals but are more intelligent and can become a tattoo on their summoners body. There are also the great beasts which the series centres around. Even though most of the animals don’t talk, they each have a unique personality and they feel like their own characters. Each book is not very long but there are a lot of books in the series, including the sequel series and special editions. There was a online video game that I played a couple of times, unfortunately it’s gone now.

I found it interesting that each book is written by a different author and it doesn’t hide that fact, a lot of other series that are written by multiple people or have ghost writers use a pen name eg Erin Hunter. Despite all the different authors, the writing style and tone is very consistent.

Also, now that I’ve re-read it as an adult, I realise the countries in this world are just fantasy versions of America, Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia, and fantasy Australia is where the villains and conqueror army comes from and as Australian, that is hilarious to me.

Ga'hoole!

Can I post about a movie adaptation ?

Just watched again Snyder's adaptation of Guardians of Ga'hoole! (Haven't watched it since being a teen, thought it was a super fun movie back then) Visually breathtaking, the story is simple but I liked the characters and the realistic character designs based on real owl species.

Apparently, the books have more lore.

Anyone read/remember this series growing up?

I remember it being a lot like the Erin Hunter books, but dire wolves. It was a pleasant read.

I haven't seen anyone talk about the Book of the Named series by Clare Bell yet.

This is retelling of prehistory from the pov of prehistoric big cats. Have you ever wondered "what would have happened if big cats learned to harness fire and tame other animals? What would their culture look like? What unique ways would they overcome hardship?" The series gets quite dark, but the characters really grow in each book. Highly recommend this series.

Warrior Cats haul from this past weekend!

Since I have pretty much all of the books on what's become my own Warrior Cats shelf/shrine, my next goal is to get the older arcs from The Prophecies Begin to Dawn of the Clans in the older/original covers (as the art style of Wayne McLoughlin really hits harder for the earlier part of the series, though it is cool how the newer Owen Richardson ones form a picture on the spines), and I managed to find half of those ones for Power of Three on a hunt I went out on!

So with that, so far I have all of The Prophecies Begin and half of Power of Three (Outcast, Eclipse, and Long Shadows) in the older/original covers!

Feral comics fanart

My old pieces for the Feral comic. I love the contrast between the Disney-inspired style and the horror elements.

The Guardian Herd - Pegasus series

A middle school fantasy series about a pegasus called Star with a prophecy: “Once every hundred years, a black foal is born, prophesied to either unite or destroy the five herds of flying horses that live in Anok—fated to become the most powerful pegasus in all of the land.” Theres also a spin off trilogy of this series. There’s a “cast” list at the start of each book with the names of the characters in each herd and a brief description of them which is something I appreciate. If you like Warriors or Wings of Fire you might like this series.

"Chilling Adventures of Salem" by Archie Horror

"Salem the cat has always been known as Sabrina’s familiar, but what happens when Sabrina isn’t around to protect him (or, as the case may be, when he doesn’t have to protect her)? This special one-shot explores a different side of Salem’s life, one where he acts as an anti-hero meting out vigilante justice against those who harm others like him (animals) in a horror story that equal parts Pet Sematary."

The Silver Brumby - Classic Australian Novel

I loved this book, but haven’t read it in a long time. It’s about brumby’s (wild horses) living in the Australian snowy mountains. There’s a lot of Brumby stories by the author, Elyne Mitchell, but I haven’t read most of them. I did find the plots were a bit repetitive though. There’s also a movie and an animated series. I watched the animated series alot when I was younger.

Went a Little Hog Wild Between Recommendations and My Own Choices!

Page 1 - Ended up grabbing the Beasts of Burden Omnibus because it was cheaper than trying to get all the other single trades I didn't have. WE3, Laika, A Cat Story were recommended. In finding those recommendations I found Redwall which ticks two of my boxes - animal stories and graphic novel adaptations of books - so I was stoked to find it!

Page 2 - Bunnicula was recommended (and I would have gotten this anyway as soon as I saw it because this is one of my favorite series from childhood). Inkblot and Strayed are trades that I'm switching the singles for the trades. They are just easier to store. LOL! And, of course, another one that is animal stories and a book adaptation. :D

Page 3 - This picture is just here for the Unico that I was recommended. It's a picture I took for a different post and am just repurposing. :D

Page 4 & 5 - The backs of Inkblot (4) and Strayed (5) just in case anyone else is interested in checking these two out. :)

"Heart of a Dog" by Mikhail Bulgakov

"When rich, successful Professor Preobrazhensky befriends a scroungy Moscow mongrel named Sharik, he attempts a scientific first--transplanting into the stray dog the testes and pituitary gland of a recently deceased man. With a lecherous, vulgar human animal now on the loose, the professor's hitherto respectable life descends into chaos as Sharik inevitably finds his niche in the bureaucracy as the government official in charge of purging the city of cats."
