Finally got my Windows Server RRAS VPN working after 3 days of troubleshooting

I've been building out my Windows Server homelab and recently started working on RRAS and VPNs. This was supposed to be a fairly simple lab, but it ended up taking me about three days to get everything working properly.

The lab

I'm running the lab in VirtualBox with a Windows 11 client and a Windows Server machine acting as the RRAS/VPN server.

The server is using 192.168.56.10 on the lab network, and the Windows 11 VM is the VPN client.

The main goal of this lab was to understand how a Windows-based VPN actually works rather than just following a tutorial. I wanted to get hands-on experience with:

  • RRAS
  • VPN address pools
  • VPN authentication
  • GRE traffic
  • Windows Firewall
  • Routing
  • Domain authentication
  • Troubleshooting connectivity from the client side

What went wrong

The first problem was that the VPN client could connect to RRAS but wasn't receiving an IP address.

After checking the RRAS configuration, I realized I needed to configure a static address pool. I added: 192.168.56.100 - 192.168.56.120

After that, the client was finally receiving an address.

Then I ran into problems with the VPN protocols. Since this particular lab was focused on PPTP, I disabled the other VPN protocols I wasn't using and restarted RRAS to simplify the configuration while troubleshooting.

The next problem was connectivity. The VPN would establish, but I couldn't reach the server from the client. I checked the Windows Firewall, GRE traffic and the RRAS interface bindings until I found the configuration issue.

Finally, I started getting Error 691 during authentication.

The credentials were correct, so I checked the authentication settings on the Windows client. MS-CHAP v2 wasn't enabled as expected. After changing the authentication settings and reconnecting, the VPN finally worked.

Verification

From the Windows 11 client I used: rasdial "TestConnection" iskutashi Isse190239 and ping 192.168.56.10

The connection was established successfully and the server responded with: 0% packet loss

I also verified the VPN connection through the Windows Network & Internet settings.

The screenshots show both the Windows VPN connection and the PowerShell verification.

This lab was mainly about learning how RRAS, VPN authentication, routing and firewall rules interact. I'm continuing to build this environment so I can use it to practice more Windows administration and networking scenarios.

One important note: I'm using PPTP here strictly as a learning exercise. I wouldn't use PPTP for a real production VPN because it's a legacy and insecure protocol.

For anyone running a Windows-based homelab, what would you add to this lab next? I'm thinking about testing another VPN protocol and adding more clients to make the environment a little closer to a real network.

Finally got RRAS VPN working after three days of troubleshooting

I've been working on a small RRAS VPN lab in my Windows Server environment, and it took me about three days to get everything working properly. The first problem was that the VPN client could connect to RRAS, but it wasn't receiving an IP address. After checking the RRAS configuration, I found that I needed to configure a static address pool. I added a pool from 192.168.56.100 to 192.168.56.120, and the client started receiving an address. After that, I ran into several other issues around the VPN protocols and RRAS configuration. I wasn't using L2TP, SSTP or IKEv2 for this lab, so I simplified the configuration and focused on getting the PPTP connection working. The next issue was connectivity. The VPN connection would establish, but I couldn't reach the server on the other side. I checked the firewall, GRE traffic and the RRAS interface bindings until I finally got the routing working. The last problem was authentication. I was getting Error 691 even though I was using valid domain credentials. After checking the authentication settings on the client, I found that MS-CHAP v2 wasn't enabled. Once I changed the client configuration and connected again, the VPN finally came up.

I verified the connection from the Windows 11 client with: resdial "TestConnection" iskutashi Isse190239 and ping 192.168.56.10

The screenshots in teh comment show the VPN connection on the client and the PowerShell verification. This was done purely as a homelab exercise to understand how RRAS, VPN authentication, routing and firewall rules fit together. I wouldn't use PPTP for a production VPN because it's a legacy and insecure protocol.

For those who have worked with RRAS or Windows-based VPNs in production, what was the most common issue you ran into when troubleshooting VPN connectivity?

Has anyone here found an office or IT job in Italy as an immigrant?

Just looking for some advice from people who have been through something similar.

I'm an immigrant living and working in Italy, and my goal is to get a junior IT Support or Help Desk job.

I have about one year of professional IT experience, and over the last nine months I've been studying almost every day and building home lab projects to gain practical experience, I don't have a university degree in CS/IT but I have GitHub projects and documentation and I had some interviews so some recruiters said it's enough to use as prove of knowing the skills needed, but still no job offer.

Before moving into IT, I worked for around seven years in agriculture engineering and accounting. I also have two bachelor's degrees (Agriculture and Economics) from Somalia, both recognized in Italy. I also spent a year working in customer service for KFC in Croatia.

My biggest challenge is my Italian. Right now I'm around A2 and still improving, while my English is fluent (C2).

I currently live and work in southern Italy, but I'd happily relocate anywhere in the north for an IT support, help desk, or junior system administrator role.

From what I see and hear, the Italian job market seems pretty tough, especially for junior office jobs. I often hear people talking about low salaries and how competitive the market has become, so I'm wondering how realistic my chances are.

Has anyone here started an IT career in Italy with limited Italian? If so, how did you get your first opportunity? Was it through a consulting company, a recruitment agency, networking, or just applying everywhere?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience or any advice you have.

Thanks.

Cosa ho configurato:

Ho creato e collegato una nuova GPO:

Milan-Security-Baseline

Configurazioni principali:

🔐 Password Policy

  • Complessità password abilitata
  • Cronologia password: 5 password ricordate
  • Lunghezza minima: 8 caratteri
  • Età massima password: 90 giorni
  • Età minima password: 2 giorni

🔒 Account Lockout Policy

  • Soglia blocco account: 3 tentativi falliti
  • Durata blocco: 30 minuti

🛡️ Local Security Options

  • Account Guest disabilitato
  • UAC abilitato
  • Restrizione accesso anonimo al database SAM

📋 Audit Policy

  • Eventi di accesso (Logon)
  • Validazione credenziali
  • Modifiche alle policy
  • Gestione degli account

🔥 Windows Firewall

  • Attivato per tutti i profili:
    • Domain
    • Private
    • Public

👤 User Rights Assignment

  • Accesso locale
  • Accesso remoto
  • Arresto del sistema
  • Accesso alla rete

Verifica tramite PowerShell:

net accounts

secedit /export /cfg C:\SecurityPolicy.inf

auditpol /get /category:*

Get-NetFirewallProfile

gpresult /h C:\GPReport.html

Ho inoltre esportato i report INF e HTML per documentazione e troubleshooting.

Risultato finale:

✅ Tutte le policy applicate correttamente
✅ Account Guest disabilitato
✅ Password complexity attiva
✅ ClearTextPassword = 0
✅ Firewall attivo
✅ Audit logging configurato

Prossimo step: distribuzione software tramite GPO (Chrome, 7-Zip, AnyDesk).

🧠 Built my first Active Directory Security Baseline — verified every policy with PowerShell 💪

After 3 days of troubleshooting domain connectivity issues, I finally completed my first branch-specific Active Directory security baseline for my Milan OU in my home lab.

The goal was to create an enterprise-style GPO that hardens the environment and then verify that every setting actually applied — not just assume it worked.

📸 Screenshot attached with the verification results.

What I implemented:

Created and linked a new GPO:

Milan-Security-Baseline

Configured:

🔐 Password Policy

  • Password complexity enabled
  • Password history: 5 remembered passwords
  • Minimum length: 8 characters
  • Maximum password age: 90 days
  • Minimum password age: 2 days

🔒 Account Lockout Policy

  • Threshold: 3 failed attempts
  • Lockout duration: 30 minutes

🛡️ Local Security Options

  • Guest account disabled
  • UAC enabled
  • Anonymous SAM enumeration restricted

📋 Audit Policy

  • Logon events
  • Credential validation
  • Policy changes
  • Account management auditing

🔥 Windows Firewall

  • Enabled for Domain, Private, and Public profiles

👤 User Rights Assignment

  • Local logon permissions
  • Remote logon permissions
  • Shutdown permissions
  • Network access permissions

Verification tools used:

net accounts

secedit /export /cfg C:\SecurityPolicy.inf

auditpol /get /category:*

Get-NetFirewallProfile

gpresult /h C:\GPReport.html

I also exported the INF and HTML reports for documentation and troubleshooting.

Final verification:

✅ All policies applied successfully
✅ Guest account disabled
✅ Password complexity enabled
✅ ClearTextPassword = 0
✅ Firewall active on all profiles
✅ Audit logging enabled

This was my first time building a complete security baseline from scratch, and seeing every setting confirmed through PowerShell was a great feeling.

Still learning, but this is exactly the kind of hands-on practice I want to gain before working in a real IT environment.

Next step: GPO-based software deployment (Chrome, 7-Zip, AnyDesk).

Finally understood how AD account lockouts work after building the whole workflow myself

https://preview.redd.it/0qoco70j0leh1.png?width=1911&format=png&auto=webp&s=60ded55732ba0c9ee879edea16cb3ec85da01a3a

Today I finished one of my favorite Active Directory labs so far: configuring and testing an account lockout policy from start to finish.

I'm self-studying for a career in IT with a home lab, and every time I complete a lab that simulates a real support task, it makes the concepts click a little more.

This lab included:

  • Configuring the Default Domain Policy:
    • Account lockout threshold: 3 invalid attempts
    • Account lockout duration: 0 (manual unlock required)
    • Reset account lockout counter after 10 minutes
  • Updating Group Policy on both the domain controller and client
  • Verifying the policy with net accounts
  • Locking a test account by entering incorrect passwords
  • Confirming the account lockout from both machines
  • Finding the locked account with:Search-ADAccount -LockedOut
  • Unlocking it using:Unlock-ADAccount -Identity <username>
  • Verifying the account status afterward with Get-ADUser

The part I enjoyed most was seeing the entire workflow—from applying the policy to triggering the lockout, identifying the account, and unlocking it successfully.

Each lab like this gives me a better understanding of the kind of issues a helpdesk technician or junior system administrator might encounter in a Windows domain environment.

I'm still at the beginning of my IT journey, but every completed lab makes me a little more confident than I was yesterday.

On to the next one.

https://preview.redd.it/0udmtwfqefdh1.png?width=1316&format=png&auto=webp&s=873381071c9552afc1de4650d4f99e67ae001fe6

Ciao a tutti,

Grazie!

Windows Server Home Lab | Practicing Active Directory Administration from the Command Line

https://preview.redd.it/fqad52trcfdh1.png?width=1316&format=png&auto=webp&s=eb9e81c4afba4dfadb6510e196d4eaa838a3ed0b

Hi everyone,

I've been building and improving my Windows Server 2022 Active Directory home lab since April, and today's session focused on performing common administrative tasks from the Command Prompt instead of relying only on Active Directory Users and Computers (ADUC).

I wanted to understand better how the actions we perform in the GUI translate into command-line operations, so I practiced a few common tasks that a Help Desk technician might encounter.

In today's lab I:

  • Listed the members of a security group.
  • Added an existing domain user to another security group using net group.
  • Verified the user's group memberships using net user.

The attached screenshot shows the commands I executed and the verification that the user's group memberships were updated successfully.

My goal isn't just to memorize commands—it's to understand how Active Directory works behind the scenes and build practical skills that I'll use in a real Help Desk environment.

Next, I'll start learning the PowerShell equivalents so I can automate these administrative tasks instead of performing them manually.
I'd really appreciate your feedback:

  • What other Active Directory tasks should every junior Help Desk technician practice?
  • Which real-world support scenarios would you recommend adding to my home lab?
  • If you notice anything I could improve, I'd love to hear your suggestions.

Thanks!

Active Directory Enterprise Lab Environment

I spent around 7 hours building the entire Milan environment in my Active Directory home lab from scratch.

So far I've:

  • Created the OU structure (Finance, HR, IT, Marketing, Sales)
  • Added users, security groups, and computers
  • Joined workstations to the domain
  • Created and linked a baseline GPO
  • Deployed a company wallpaper policy
  • Verified everything with gpupdate and gpresult

Seeing the policies apply successfully after troubleshooting everything myself was really satisfying.

I'm currently preparing for an IT Support tier 1 or 2 role, and every lab I complete makes me feel a little more confident that I'm building the right skills. There's still a lot to learn, but it's rewarding to see everything come together.

Tomorrow I'm moving on to the London environment. Looking forward to making it a bit more complex than today's setup.

If anyone has ideas for realistic AD projects or common IT Support tasks I should add to my lab, I'd love to hear them.

Come imparare l’italiano velocemente per essere assunto in IT? (6 mesi di obiettivo)

Ciao a tutti,

Grazie a tutti 🙏

Am I finally hireable for my first IT Helpdesk job in Italy?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to understand if I’m actually hireable right now, and I’d really like to hear from people who were in the same situation as me.

I live in Italy, and I’m working toward my first real IT job — ideally Helpdesk / IT Support Specialist. I’ve been studying consistently, building labs, and practicing real troubleshooting skills, but I still struggle with confidence. I want to compare my progress with what others experienced before getting their first role.

Here’s what I’ve learned and practiced so far:

- I built Windows and Linux labs where I practiced user management, permissions, ACLs, file operations, and troubleshooting.

- I practiced ticketing workflows using Spiceworks: creating tickets, assigning priorities, documenting fixes, and closing them properly.

- I studied networking fundamentals: IP addressing, DNS, DHCP, Wi‑Fi troubleshooting, mobile device connectivity, and basic router/switch concepts.

- I practiced Windows administration: PowerShell basics, local users/groups, permissions, device management, and software installation methods.

- I practiced Linux administration: navigation, permissions, ownership, groups, package management, and basic shell scripting.

- I’ve been studying for CompTIA A+–level topics (even though I’m not taking the exam yet).

- I have strong customer service experience from previous jobs, which I know is important for helpdesk roles.

- I’m improving my Italian, but I’m still not fluent enough for advanced communication-heavy roles.

What I’m trying to understand is: At what point did you feel hireable?

Did you get your first job with similar experience, or did you need more?

I’d really appreciate hearing your stories — what helped you get hired, what you wish you knew earlier, and how you knew you were “ready.”

Thanks to anyone who replies. I’m trying to stay motivated and understand where I stand compared to others.

How realistic is it to get an IT job in the EU without a university degree?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to understand how the EU job market works for people entering IT without a university degree. I have industry certifications like Google IT Support, CompTIA A+, and I’m working toward more. I’m mainly interested in roles like Helpdesk, IT Support, or Junior Sysadmin.

I’d like to know from people working in the EU:

Do EU employers actually recognize industry certifications like CompTIA, Google, Cisco, AWS, etc.? Is a university degree mandatory for entry‑level IT roles, or can experience + certs be enough?

How important is language? Is English alone enough in most countries, or is the local language required for support roles? How are salaries structured for junior IT roles across the EU? (e.g., typical ranges, contract types, junior vs mid-level categories)

Any insights from people working in IT across Europe would be really helpful.

Thanks in advance.

Cerco lavoro a Caltanissetta: qualcuno può aiutarmi?

Ho M26 anni e vivo a Caltanissetta.
