Initiating Handling Help
I have owned a Boa Imperator for 5 weeks so far. She was born February 2025 She's eating well every 10 days.
I use target and tap training.
I've strictly only handled her when she's already been out of hiding. Unfortunately, she is hiding basically all the time, except some nights, where I wake up to the enclosure having been scrambled around.
My reasoning is that I don't want to lift her hide, which she associates with safety, which could teach her that she's not safe anywhere.
I wonder if this is a real concern or not?
Or if socialising her regularly, despite having to lift the hide, tap her and pick her up is okay in the long run to get her used to handling?
I'm regularly in the enclosure in short intervals to do water exchange or misting for humidity control, which also shows her that activity is not something to be afraid of.
During our handling sessions, she's been impeccable, very calm, curious and slow moving.
After I put her back in the enclosure, she explores her enclosure for the remainder of the day. She doesn't sprint to her hide at all.
So all in all, she seems to be doing well. I just want to know the best approach to utilise in my pursuit of making her more prone to being out in the open.
