Graytail — The Minish Cap meets OneShot

Graytail is a game inspired by Zelda: The Minish Cap — but tonally closer to OneShot. Been working on it for 40+ months now. There's a playable demo on Steam if you want to try it out.

Every weapon failed. except one. 🥏

Added a metal frisbee to Graytail.

Under the hood it's pretty standard. Euler integration on acceleration and velocity, plus surface reflections. Nothing fancy.

What gave me trouble: with just that, the frisbee wouldn't follow the player around. It'd just keep orbiting in the air while the player walked off. Ended up adding tangential damping (basically killing the velocity component perpendicular to the player-to-frisbee direction), and now it trails along nicely.

Hardest thing I've built in this game so far.

Spent 2 to 3 weeks on this and just wrapped it up. Honestly the hardest piece of work I've done on Graytail.

It wasn't one thing. I had to build IK from scratch, write a stepper for the legs, redo the character controller so it could float along walls, and migrate our custom pathfinding to put nodes on walls instead of just floors. All of it was bigger than I thought going in.

The part that really killed me was the spider getting stuck in corners. Inside corners, outside corners, weird spots where wall meets ceiling. I spent so many hours just chasing down edge cases.

Made a short video showing how it works.
