Removing the bullet

You know what really twists my melons? When someone gets shot, and then a surgeon saves them by removing the bullet. It’s the damage caused by the bullet that will cause death or disability. Removing it doesn’t reverse that damage.

And while I’m off on one, someone shot with an arrow does not instantly fall down dead. And someone who’s received a traumatic brain injury sufficient to render them unconscious, cannot be ‘brought round’ again by a gentle slap on the cheek, or a glass of water thrown over them.

Jeez…

CGI doggies

Just watched Supergirl, the new movie with Milly Alcock.

It features an obviously CGI dog, that I presume is supposed to be some kind of wire-haired terrier.

Now I get that it’s very clever, if you’re a computer animation artist, to get the ears, and each individual hair of your creation to waft gently in the breeze every time it moves, or shakes its head. But real animals’ bits do not move like that. Dogs’ ears are fairly stiff in real life, and any dog other then perhaps a well-groomed Saluki, has hair that behaves like, well, dog hair.

Contrast the dog’s hair with Supergirl’s hair. Some of hers moves a bit when she does, but most of it stays still, and looks a little scruffy. Just like real hair.

The same happened with the CGI deer in Disclosure Day. Deer hair is stiff. If you’re going to try and CGI an animal, at least try to get it right.

I’m still not sure why they couldn’t have just used a real dog in this film. I for one would have been far less distracted by the shitty computerised dog, and probably enjoyed the film a little more as a result.

Lonely sparrow?

We have a vent for an un-used extractor fan on our upper house wall. Birds have nested there before (we have foot-thick walls). For the last two weeks there has been a male sparrow sat on the corner of the house just above it, tweeting all day, every day! He pops into the vent occasionally.

Is he trying to attract a mate to his pad, or has something gone wrong with the female and the nestlings inside? Just curious - any knowledgable thoughts very welcome. Thanks.

Crow unable to fly

I’ve seen this crow hanging around the top of the field where we walk our dog for four days now. It can’t fly - can flutter up to the top of a dry stone wall but that’s about it. Usually 1-3 other crows hanging around. I just assumed it was old and ill - the wing feathers are very ragged and a bit grey-looking in parts. But could it be a juvenile? Surprised it has lasted this long - i’ve been leaving some raw chicken now and again which seems to disappear.

Timex ‘SSQ’ repair?

My wife’s dad passed away recently, and we have found his watch she remembers from her childhood - LCD Timex model with ‘SSQ’ below the screen. I’ve managed to ‘power it up’ with a new battery, but the display is stuck at 12:00. One button press makes the screen go blank, and the other does nothing.

Is it possible to get a repair on this sort of watch. Very grateful for any pointers. We’re in the UK.

Does anyone else remember the Index Medicus? Pre-internet. Pre-microfiche (I think.) I qualified in 1986, and as a med student (from 1981) if you wanted to look up any research, you consulted the many paper volumes of the IM. I think it was constantly ‘updated’ with appendices, with a full update (delivered by truck, presumably) every couple of years or so.
