Mapping out progression for a rogue/ranger build

Hey everyone, I could use some advice building my next character

Context: I’m designing a Rogue/Ranger multiclass for a higher level campaign that starts at level 12 and might see us play until level 17-20. We use 2014 rules, with some 2024 exceptions at our DM’s discretion (Rogue gets Reliable Talent at level 7 for example). Additionally, everyone gets a free feat.

I thought about going with an Arcane Trickster 7 / Gloom Stalker 5 multiclass because I prefer the spell utility over the conditional burst damage potential of Assassin. My weapon of choice would be a light or heavy crossbow. The idea is to have multiple ways to generate advantage on both weapon attacks to crit fish for sneak attacks and sharpshooter bonus damage.

Regarding spellcasting, Arcane Trickster uses 2024 rules so no spell school restrictions. I’m trying to find which level 0-2 spells from the wizard and ranger lists would best compliment my playstyle/which synergies you would point out. Feel free to be as elaborate as possible, the more suggestions the better

As for higher levels, my character’s backstory is set up in a way that lets them further multiclass into wizard or fighter (this lore tie-in was one of our DM’s requirements for the campaign).

Do you think two levels of fighter for action surge down the line are worth it?

Would you first grab rogue level 8 for the next ASI?

What are your thoughts on grabbing a few wizard levels for more utility cantrips and another subclass?

Should I scrap multiclassing altogether and try an Arcane Trickster+Haste setup instead?

Map out the character level progression as much as you want, I genuinely appreciate any bit of insight you may have.

Thank you in advance for all of your ideas

Choosing useful spells for my rogue/ranger multiclass
